  • Geomorphology of craters located at Mercury’s north pole

Open Access•Silvia Bertoli, Alice Lucchetti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

We present the first highly detailed morphological analysis of three craters located in Mercury's north pole, characterized by permanently shadowed regions (PSRs). This study, which began with an initial sample of 14 craters, highlighted three morphological classes, based on the craters’ features: Complete complex morphology, Flat-floor morphology, and Immature complex morphology, presented here as maps of three representative craters, one for ea…

  • Geology of Lanzarote's northern region (Canary Island, Spain)

Open Access•Ilaria Tomasi, Matteo Tonello et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

This work presents a detailed volcano-geological map of the Northern region of Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain). This map is a synthesis of gathered and interpreted field data and geological maps. We have integrated information obtained from: (a) detailed geological field surveys, (b) high-resolution digital elevation models (DTMs), (c) aerial orthophotographs, (d) morphometric analysis of eruptive deposits and volcanic structure (i.e. lava tube…

  • Deterioration Effects on Bricks Masonry in the Venice Lagoon Cultural Heritage: Study of the Main Façade of the Santa Maria dei Servi Church (14th Century)

Open Access•Chiara Coletti, Ludovica Pia Cesareo et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2023•References: 2

Tidal exchange, capillary rise, water condensation-evaporation cycles, and crystallization of salts are the main causes of damage in historic brick buildings in Venice. The present study addressed these issues by proposing a study of twenty-three brick samples collected on the main façade of the Santa Maria dei Servi Church (14th century). The color, mineralogical composition, and texture of these samples were studied using standard methods such …

  • Geology of the Kuiper quadrangle (H06), Mercury

Open Access•Lorenza Giacomini, Valentina Galluzzi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2022

The Kuiper quadrangle (H06) is located at the equatorial zone of Mercury and encompasses the area between 288°E – 360°E and 22.5°N – 22.5°S. Using the NASA MESSENGER data, we compiled a geological map of the quadrangle at a 1:3,000,000 scale. The mapping was mainly based on photo-interpretation of an MDIS (Mercury Dual Imaging System) monochrome 166 m/pixel basemap. Additional datasets were also considered: stereo-DTM of the region, mosaics with …

  • Recession rate of carbonate rocks used in cultural heritage: Textural control assessed by accelerated ageing tests

    Open Access•Salvini, Renzo Bertoncello et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 75

In this study, the recession rate of eleven carbonate stones widely used in the cultural heritage of northeastern Italy and differing in their textural features and mineralogical composition was investigated. Samples of stones known as Vicenza (Nanto and Costozza varieties), Carrara marble, Verona (Red and Brown varieties), Asiago, Istria (Orsera variety), Aurisina, Chiampo (Ondagata and Paglierino varieties), and Botticino were subjected to acce…

  • Mapping and Monitoring Urban Environment through Sentinel-1 SAR Data: A Case Study in the Veneto Region (Italy)

Open Access•Andrea Semenzato, Salvatore Eugenio Pappalardo et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2020

Focusing on a sustainable and strategic urban development, local governments and public administrations, such as the Veneto Region in Italy, are increasingly addressing their urban and territorial planning to meet national and European policies, along with the principles and goals of the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development. In this regard, we aim at testing a methodology based on a semi-automatic approach able to extract the spatial exten…

  • Pre-Alpine and Alpine deformation at San Pellegrino pass (Dolomites, Italy)

Open Access•Tiziano Abbà, Anna Breda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2018

In this work, we present the geological map of the San Pellegrino pass, inserted in the spectacular scenario of the Dolomiti region (Southern Alps, Italy), at a scale of 1:10.000 and accompanied by geological cross-sections. The detailed distinction of lithological thin units allowed to achieve a consistent interpretation of the local structural setting by drawing brittle and ductile Alpine tectonic deformations. The differential deformation and …

  • Geo-structural map of the Laguna Blanca basin (Southern Central Andes, Catamarca, Argentina)

Open Access•Anna Traforti, Matteo Massironi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

The Laguna Blanca basin is a rhomb-shaped basin located at the SE margin of the Puna plateau in the southern Central Andes (Catamarca, Argentina). An interactive analysis using remote sensing and field mapping enabled us to produce a geo-structural map at a 1:350,000 scale. Satellite images from multispectral sensors (ASTER and Landsat 7 ETM+) and medium resolution Digital Elevation Models (SRTM and ASTER GDEM) were used in order to recognize the…

  • Geology of the Brenner Pass-Fortezza transect, Italian Eastern Alps

Open Access•Alessio Schiavo, Giorgio Vittorio Dal Piaz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2015

We present a 1:30,000 geological map resulting from detailed geostructural surveys carried out along the Italian segment of the design corridor for the Brenner Pass railway base tunnel (BBT), extending from Fortezza (Italy) to Innsbruck (Austria). The map covers the southern part of the Austroalpine-Penninic collisional wedge, the Periadriatic Fault System, associated Oligocene igneous bodies (Periadriatic magmatism) and part of the Southalpine b…

  • Geomorphology of the El Alamein Battlefield (Southern Front, Egypt)

Open Access•Aldino Bondesan, Stefano Furlani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2013

This map outlines the main processes and related landforms of the stretch of the Western Desert from Deir El Munassib to El Taqa Plateau, south of El Alamein (Egypt). Freely available digital elevation data derived from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, image processing of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer and field surveys have led to the geomorphological map at 1:40,000 scale. Landforms constitute the result…

  • Geological map of the Middle Triassic Latemar platform (Western Dolomites, Northern Italy)

Open Access•Pierparide Gramigna, Marco Franceschi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2013

The Latemar is a Middle Triassic isolated carbonate buildup with a diameter of approximately 3 km, that crops out in the western Dolomites, northern Italy. The platform is an important case study and potential analogue for carbonate hydrocarbon reservoirs. Detailed field mapping of the platform has been carried out on a high-resolution topographic base extracted from airborne LIDAR to produce a geological map at 1:5000 scale. Remote sensing was u…
