Emancipatory Space of the Political and Social Movements
On the occasion of the centenary of the Republic of Turkey, this chapter analyses the accumulation of political and social movements in Turkey and their relationship with the state apparatus. The 1990s saw major developments within the Kurdish movement in Turkey, both politically and militarily. The Turkish state responded with a new repertoire of violence, characterized by irregular warfare methods. This article situates the phenomenon of enforced disappearance, employed by the state as part of its asymmetric strategy, within the broader context of memory space and everyday experience. This article situates the case of Temizöz and Others in a broader context of sovereignty, law and waiting in Turkey. To do so, I put the production of a category for the relatives of the disappeared through a peculiar temporal lens, scrutinising different waiting types that create intertwined notions of hope, loyalty, anxiety and ambiguity. Land disputes on the outskirts of Istanbul
This paper focuses on struggles for land by ordinary people in globalizing cities. By drawing on three cases in Istanbul, it explores the circumstances under which these struggles can be successful. It analyses the evolution of the self-built settlements of Ayazma, Yakacık and Hürriyet and their varied outcomes, from legalization to razing. Three conditions seem to explain why land titling was obtained in Yakacık and proved impossible elsewhere. …
