  • Development of the voiceless sibilant fricative contrast in three-year-olds: An ultrasound and acoustic study

    Open Access•Natalia Zharkova•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2021

The study analysed spectral and tongue shape dynamics of voiceless alveolar and postalveolar fricatives produced by ten children learning Scottish English. Synchronised ultrasound tongue imaging data and acoustic data were used to characterise children's productions of the phonemic contrast. Six children had consistently accurate productions of both fricative targets, with some cross-consonant phonetic differences in the direction previously demo…

  • An ultrasound study of lingual coarticulation in /sV/ syllables produced by adults and typically developing children

Open Access•Natalia Zharkova, Nigel Hewlett et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2012•Cited by: 6•References: 36

According to the Degree of Articulatory Constraint model of lingual coarticulation, the consonant /s/ has some scope for tongue adaptation to neighbouring vowels, since the tongue dorsum is not directly involved in constriction formation for this consonant. The present study aimed to establish whether the tongue shape for /s/ in consonant-vowel syllables was influenced by the nature of the following vowel, in Scottish-English-speaking children an…

    Open Access•Natalia Zharkova, Nigel Hewlett•ARTICLE•Journal of Phonetics•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 28
