  • Self-Effacing Barbie

Open Access•John Michael Corrigan, Justin Prystash•ARTICLE•Film-Philosophy•2025

This article argues that the immediate critical responses to the blockbuster film Barbie (Greta Gerwig, 2023), which diverged along ideological lines, fail to account for the extent to which the film undercuts the very ideological divisions that sustain them. Rather than or in addition to presenting a left-wing or right-wing critique of contemporary gender roles, the film positions this contest within the vexed relationship between the ideal and …

  • The American Art of Memory

    John Michael Corrigan•ARTICLE•Religion and the Arts•2021•References: 1

This article provides a genealogy of the architectural figuration of human cognition from the ancient world to Renaissance Europe and, finally, to the American Renaissance where it came to possess a striking cultural and literary potency. The first section pursues the two-fold task of elucidating this archetypal trope for consciousness, both its ancient moorings and its eventual transmission into Europe. The second section shows that three of the…

  • Codas of Creation

John Michael Corrigan•ARTICLE•Religion and the Arts•2015

This article gives a mystical interpretation of Terrence Malick’s award-winning film, The Tree of Life (2011), arguing that Malick carefully develops two esoteric patterns to structure his visual language: first, a triadic symbolism of divine emanation and return, and second, a complementary alchemical pattern of ascent and descent portraying the process of regeneration. Far from being a doctrinal presentation of Christianity, as some critics sup…

  • Disrupting Flow

    Open Access•John Michael Corrigan, Maria Corrigan•ARTICLE•Television & New Media•2011

This article examines how the Seinfeld and Sopranos series finales problematize a contemporary televisual ethos that Raymond Williams famously characterized as “flow.” These finales at once question their status as product and, in the case of The Sopranos, offer a direct critique to the nature of televisual flow itself. The emergence of such avant-garde intentionality in network and cable television underscores, moreover, a fundamental tension be…

  • From Unity to Locality

    Open Access•John Michael Corrigan, John Corrigan•ARTICLE•Church History•2011•Cited by: 1

In 1932, Shirley Jackson Case, a recent president of the American Society of Church History, summarized the activities of the "The Church History Deputation to the Orient" by rehearsing some of the questions that the visiting scholars asked of their colleagues in Asia. Among those queries were these: "What service is the study of Church History as a whole rendering to Christianity today in your country? Could this service be improved, and, if so,…

  • The Metempsychotic Mind

John Michael Corrigan•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of Ideas•2010

This article argues that Ralph Waldo Emerson employs metempsychosis (reincarnation or the transmigration of the soul into successive bodies) as a figurative template for human consciousness. Mapping various traditions from Hinduism, Pythagoreanism, Platonism, and Neoplatonism onto the vastness of the geological and biological records, Emerson translates metaphysics for modernity: he depicts the soul's journey through the chronological sequence of…
