May and Anarchism in Cuba
This article reflects on the significance of the celebration of 1 May in Cuba. From a transnational perspective, the national issues of the island are linked to the use of the internationalist ideals and practices of anarchists to show how the anniversary contributed to the growth of anarchism, but at the same time its commemoration was mediated by the Cuban political reality. Two stages of this development are distinguished, divided by Cuba’s la…

Anarchist Immigrants in Spain and Argentina
Anarchism has been one of the issues most studied by Spanish historians who deal with the labor movement. Not surprisingly, anarchism's development took longer in Spain than in other European and American countries, and its influence on the social and political level was greater. In general, most analyses have been framed within the Spanish national context; much less common are studies that highlight the journey of the Spanish anarchists who lef…
State of Ambiguity
Cuba's first republican era (1902–1959) is principally understood in terms of its failures and discontinuities, typically depicted as an illegitimate period in the nation's history, its first three decades and the overthrow of Machado at best a prologue to the real revolution of 1959. State of Ambiguity brings together scholars from North America, Cuba, and Spain to challenge this narrative, presenting republican Cuba instead as a time of meaning…
