  • Changes in Older Adults’ Sexual Expression: A Latent Transition Analysis

    Heidi Ann Lyons, D F Warner•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2025•References: 3

Many older adults are sexually active, but how sexual expression - defined as the combination of behaviors, desires, and motivations - changes over time is unclear. We addressed this gap using longitudinal data on partnered and unpartnered heterosexual older adults (ages 57-85) from the US National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP; N = 2,245) and Latent Transition Analysis. We identified six sexual expression latent statuses: versati…

  • Assembling consensual non-monogamy: Intimacies and multiplicities

    Open Access•George Sanders, Heidi Ann Lyons•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2025•References: 47

Despite growing mainstream familiarity with the practice of consensual non-monogamy (CNM) in the US and similar countries, CNM is still largely considered non-normative. With this comes the risk of reifying it as a 'kind' of sexual activity and its practitioners as 'types' of subjects. We explore CNM through assemblage theory, which aims to decenter the subject and emphasize affective relationships that operate through lines of force. Assemblage …

  • The sagacity of the surround: The casual sex-assemblages of young adults

Open Access•G Sanders, Heidi Ann Lyons•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2022

The current study applies the concept of the assemblage, an aggregation of discursive and nondiscursive bodies, objects, and ideas, to young adults and casual sex. By de-centering human subjectivity, we are able to focus on some of the ways in which dating apps and sexual desires, in addition to human and nonhuman bodies, can be propelled and/or impeded in anticipation of sexual encounters. To answer our research questions, we rely on online surv…

  • Older married couples' sexual expression: A dyadic latent class analysis

    Open Access•D F Warner, Heidi Ann Lyons•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 30

Many older adults continue to engage in sexual behavior, most often in the context of long-term marriages. Prior studies have tended to examine older adults' sexual behavior, desires and motivations separately. Thus, there remain considerable gaps in our understanding of the multifaceted-nature of older couples' sexual expression. Using dyadic latent class analysis and data on 953 heterosexual couples in long-term marriages from Wave 2 of the Nat…

  • Heterosexual Casual Sex and STI Diagnosis: A Latent Class Analysis

Heidi Ann Lyons•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sexual…•2017

Casual sex is common during the emerging adult life course stage, but little research has taken a person-centered approach to investigate if casual sexual behavior influences STI rates. Using a nationally representative sample and latent class analysis, results showed three distinctive latent classes. Abstainers were the least likely to have an STI, followed by the casual sex experienced, and then the casual sex risk-takers. Once other covariates…

  • A Collective Effort to Improve Sociology Students’ Writing Skills

    Open Access•Amanda Burgess-Proctor, Amanda Burgess‐Proctor et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 12

Nationwide, academic sociologists at all types of higher education institutions face the challenge of working to improve students’ writing skills. In this article, we describe a collective effort by a group of faculty members in one undergraduate sociology program to implement several effective writing-improvement strategies. We advocate aiming to improve students’ writing by working together on a united front rather than working in isolation. Af…

  • Gender and Casual Sexual Activity From Adolescence to Emerging Adulthood: Social and Life Course Correlates

Heidi Ann Lyons, W D Manning et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2014•Cited by: 17•References: 7

The prevalence of casual sexual activity among teens and emerging adults has led to much public attention. Yet limited research has investigated whether the number of casual sexual partners per year changes as heterosexual men and women transition from adolescence into emerging adulthood. We considered the influence of social context and life course factors on the number of casual sex partners. We examined four waves of interviews from the Toledo…

  • Young Adult Casual Sexual Behavior: Life-Course-Specific Motivations and Consequences

    Open Access•Heidi Ann Lyons, W D Manning et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2014•Cited by: 13•References: 37

Most young adults have had some casual sex experience. However, it is important to understand the motivations for such behavior. We investigate the motivations for and consequences of casual sex using a life-course lens. We use the Toledo Adolescent Relationship Study to examine a diverse sample of young adults with recent casual sexual experiences ( N = 239). We draw on a subset of in-depth relationship narratives ( N = 44) to provide a more nua…

  • Identity, Peer Relationships, and Adolescent Girls' Sexual Behavior: An Exploration of the Contemporary Double Standard

Heidi Ann Lyons, Heidi Lyons et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2010•Cited by: 35•References: 8

The idea of a sexual double standard emphasizes that men have more sexual freedom, whereas women are subject to social sanctions for the same behaviors. This research uses a sample of adolescent women to examine the social consequences of reporting a greater number of sex partners. The research explores whether there are broader social costs and feelings of low self-worth associated with a high number of sex partners, and also focuses on characte…
