Using Cognitive Testing to Develop Items for Surveying Asian American Cancer Patients and Their Caregivers as a Pathway to Culturally Competent Care
We report the results from cognitive interviews with Asian American patients and their caregivers. We interviewed seven caregivers and six patients who were all bilingual Asian Americans. The main goal of the cognitive interviews was to test a survey instrument developed for a study about perspectives of Asian American patients with advanced cancer who are facing decisions around end-of-life care. We were particularly interested to see whether it…
A Winning Alliance
This article describes the development and process of a successful collaboration between researchers at the University of Massachusetts Boston and the Massachusetts Coalition of Battered Women's Service Groups on a study documenting the prevalence and effects of domestic violence among recipients of Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) in Massachusetts. The study, which entailed 30-minute, in-person interviews with a representative samp…
Sampling Gay Men
To reduce bias imported by sampling highly affiliated respondents, RDD sampling techniques should, and can, be used in studies of gay/bisexual men
Public knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about homeless people
Media reports suggest that the public is becoming impatient with the homeless—that so‐called “compassion fatigue” has gripped the nation. This characterization of public sentiment could have important policy consequences—restrictive measures can be justified by growing public impatience, and progressive housing policies seem infeasible within a hostile climate of opinion. But evidence to support the compassion fatigue notion is anecdotal. We exam…
Depression and the social developmental context of adolescence
Gender, Social-Relationship Involvement, and Depression
Much of current thinking and research on gender differences in exposure and vulnerability to stress draws on the idea that the salience of social relationships for females is a major factor in their mental health. This study focused on gender differences in depressed mood, and the role of various interpersonal stresses, social supports, and relational involvements in accounting for this difference among adolescents. Findings from cross-sectional …
Social Structure, Life Stress, and Depressive Symptoms in a High School-Age Population
Data from a randomly selected sample of 1,208 high school-aged adolescents were used to examine the means through which life stress is associated with depressive symptoms. Analyses focus on family structure, socioeconomic status, and gender as background risks which directly and indirectly influence symptoms, as well as vulnerability contexts that shape differential responsiveness to stressful experiences. Findings indicate (1) significant gender…

Attitudes, Experiences, and Self‐Perceptions of Heroin Addicted Mothers
This study compares the mothering attitudes, experiences and self‐perceptions of 170 women in treatment for heroin addiction with those of 175 non‐addicted women of similar socio‐economic status. The interviews reveal very little difference between addicted mothers and their non‐addicted counterparts in their perceptions of how having children changes a woman's life, the nicest and worst things about having children, and good and bad reasons for …
Secondary Analysis of a Longitudinal Survey of Educated Women
This paper attempts to illustrate the flexibility inherent in many currently archived survey data sets by suggesting how one particular data set—the Ginzberg‐Yohalem Survey of Educated Women—originally collected for a different purpose, might be analyzed to address some major themes of interest to social psychologists today, including: (1) person‐situation interaction; (2) attitudes and behavior; (3) attribution theory; (4) helping behavior; and …
