Hospital admissions for non-communicable disease in the UK military and associations with alcohol use and mental health
Military personnel with a mental health problem are more likely to have an inpatient hospital admission for NCDs compared to those without, evidencing the clear links between physical and mental health in this population

This study investigates the relationship between psychosocial factors and functional gastrointestinal disorder symptomatology by testing a more comprehensive and integrated model than found in prior research. A total of 233 respondents completed an online battery to assess factors such as personality, dysfunctional cognitions and gastrointestinal anxiety. This article contests a dominant contemporary view that colonial medicine was oppressive and detrimental to welfare; in particular, that infant and maternal welfare services were culturally hegemonic in their imposition of western practices and values on indigenous women. It does so by studying the development of these services in just one British colony--the 'model colony' of Ceylon from 1900 until independence. It shows how, at both a practical…

A Possible Source of Copper Ore Fragments Found at the Old Kingdom Town of Buhen
An archaeological investigation of the Old Kingdom town of Buhen in 1962 revealed an ancient copper ‘factory’, some copper ore fragments from which have been examined by modern analytical methods. The results show that the main copper-bearing mineral in the ore is malachite but this has been extensively altered (in situ) to the green copper chloride, atacamite. The ore also contains a very high proportion of gold. The mineralogy of the ‘Buhen’ or…

The British Experience under a Statute Prohibiting Unfair Dismissal
Statutory protection against unfair dismissal was introduced in Britain in 1971. This article examines the origin, nature, and effectiveness of that statute, which is enforced by publicly funded, tripartite tribunals. The authors show that only a minority of dismissed employees enter claims under the statute; only a minority of claimants win any relief; and only a minority of successful claimants win re-employment, most receiving instead relative…
A factor analytic approach to an effective lung function screening protocol
Interrelationships among simple indices of pulmonary function derived from flow-volume curves and single-breath nitrogen tests were investigated by performing a factor analysis on data obtained from a generally healthy office working population (n = 388).
