Walls, Weed, and Coal: How Threats to Local Industry Shape Economic Voting
Immigrant detention be banned? Constituent, subconstituent, and elite influence over House Democrat's decision to cosponsor the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act
How responsive are House members to the immigration policy interest of constituents, sub‐constituencies, and businesses? We test members' responsiveness to each of these groups by focusing on House Democrats' decision to cosponsor the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act (DDIA), a bill that phases out the use of private immigrant detention facilities. We expect House Democrats to be more likely to cosponsor DDIA when their constituents possess mor…
Fluctuations of immigration salience: Testing alternative explanations of policy salience among US Latinos
What makes immigration a salient issue among Latinos? We focus on immigration – one of the most pressing issues facing the United States (US) – and evaluate the factors that motivate immigration salience among Latinos over several election cycles. Although immigration policy has been linked with the Latino electorate over the period of our study due to high foreign-born rates and mixed-status families within this community, immigration policy has…
Is the Bridge Broken? Increasing Ethnic Attachments and Declining Party Influence among Latino Voters
In this article, we test whether perceptions of Latino linked fate influence partisan identification and voting behavior among the Latino electorate across time. Specifically, we contend that attachments to the Latino community have become more widely used heuristics for Latino voters due to an increase in anti-immigrant (Latino) sentiment. Moreover, growing attachments to the Latino community have the potential to influence partisanship and even…
Expanding Carceral Markets: Detention Facilities, ICE Contracts, and the Financial Interests of Punitive Immigration Policy
The Voting Behavior of Minority Judges in the U.S. Courts of Appeals: Does the Race of the Claimant Matter
The diversification of the federal courts has led to a number of studies focusing on the voting behavior of African American and, to a lesser extent, Latino judges. Despite expectations that minority judges will vote differently from their White colleagues, extant research demonstrates mixed results. Perhaps one reason for this outcome is that they fail to account for the conditional role that coracial and coethnic claimants might have on behavio…
The Effect of Descriptive Representation on Latinos' Views of Government and of Themselves
Objective. This article investigates the relationship between descriptive representation and the political attitudes of Latino citizens in the United States. We specifically test the impact of both panethnic and national‐origin specific representation on Latino citizens' attitudes toward government and their individual‐level identity. Methods. Original data on the ethnicity and national origin of Latino mayors in 2005 and 2006 was merged with the…
The Institutional Mobility of Minority Members of Congress
This article examines the extent to which race and ethnicity affect mobility to leadership positions within Congress. The authors utilize survival analysis to examine the rate at which legislators attained committee leadership positions between the 101st and 108th Congresses. The results show that black legislators attain leadership positions faster than white legislators. This may be because of the tendency for black members of Congress (MCs) to…
