Kissing Cousins
A fundamental unresolved question in demographic research is the relative importance of biological versus social factors in determining infant and child mortality. One important biogenetic factor is consanguinity (marriage between close biological relatives), which causes the expression of deleterious recessive genes. Study of the impact of first-cousin marriage on infant and child mortality among reproductively isolated Bedouin agropastoralists …
The Biocultural Context of Very High Fertility among the Bekaa Bedouin
This research report explores some of the biocultural dimensions of maximum or near maximum fertility among Bedouin tribes in the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. The Bedouin case substantiates that very high fertility (completed family size [CFS] greater than 8.0) is found among peripheral peoples in frontier situations generated by major political-economic shifts. While the Bedouin maintained high fertility (CFS > 6.5) for approximately sixty years (1899…
Reply to Winterhalder's Behavioral and Other Human Ecologies
Introduction In anthropology, the primary goal is understanding the human condition, what makes humans human or explaining human variation and change. To critically assess what a given theory has to offer anthropological attempts to understand the human condition requires a detailed understanding of a theory and its components. For some it may seem that there is a contradiction between the goal of theory-building and that of holism. After all, th…
Anthropological Evolutionary Ecology
The goal of this paper is to critically evaluate Anthropological Evolutionary Ecology (AEE) as a paradigm by utilizing the method for theory framework developed by Pickett et al. (1994). While AEE can contribute in some ways to our understanding of human behavior through methods and techniques derived from neo-Darwinian theory (as well as current approaches in animal behavior and decision theory), AEE as a paradigm remains theoretically ill-equip…
Hierarchy Theory
Hierarchy Theory: A Vision, Vocabulary, and Epistemology Valerie Ahl and T. F. H. Allen New York: Columbia University Press, 1996. 206 pp. There is a growing interest in various fields in the abstract properties of complex systems and ways of studying them. Hierarchy theory, a product of the cross-fertilization of several disciplines, including economics, physics, chemistry, psychology, philosophy and ecology, is believed to be a promising analyt…
