  • Public value in the making of automated and datafied welfare futures

Open Access•Doris Allhutter, Anila Alushi et al.•ARTICLE•Internet Policy Review•2024

Across Europe, the public sector is expanding its efforts to introduce data-driven decision-support and intelligent systems in the administration of welfare. The growing body of research that highlights the impact and harms these systems have on citizens’ lives, raises questions about the guiding ideas, values, and norms that are at the heart of current transformations in welfare. Research in critical data studies contends a silent marketisation …

  • Semantic Media: Political Economy Perspectives on Platformized Fact Production

Open Access•Andrew Iliadis, Harry Ford et al.•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2023

Large media platforms are now in the habit of providing facts in their products and representing knowledge to various publics. For example, Google’s Knowledge Graph is a database of facts that Google uses to provide quick answers to publics who use their products, while Wikipedia has a product called Wikidata that similarly stores facts about the world in data formats through which various apps can retrieve the data. Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM us…

  • Crosscurrents: Welfare

    Open Access•Anne Kaun, Stine Lomborg et al.•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 15

In this crosscurrent contribution, we approach the notion of welfare through the lens of the data welfare state. We, further, suggest that datafied welfare can be fruitfully studied with the capabilities approach to better understand how ideas and values of data welfare intersect with and may allow for the ‘good’ life and human flourishing. The main aim is to highlight the deep-seated changes of the welfare state that emerge with the delegation o…

  • Algorithmic Profiling of Job Seekers in Austria: How Austerity Politics Are Made Effective

Open Access•Doris Allhutter, Florian Cech et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Big Data•2020

As of 2020, the Public Employment Service Austria (AMS) makes use of algorithmic profiling of job seekers to increase the efficiency of its counseling process and the effectiveness of active labor market programs. • DigitalSTS: A Field Guide for Science and Technology Studies

Janet Vertesi, David Ribes et al.•BOOK•DigitalSTS•2019

Scholars across the humanities, social sciences, and information sciences are grappling with how best to study virtual environments, use computational tools in their research, and engage audiences with their results. Classic work in science and technology studies (STS) has played a central role in how these fields analyze digital technologies, but many of its key examples do not speak to today's computational realities. This groundbreaking collec…

  • Mind Scripting: A Method for Deconstructive Design

    Open Access•Doris Allhutter•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 19

The interventionist turn in science and technology studies (STS) increasingly involves researchers with practices of technology development and thus entails the need for appropriate methodologies. Based in software engineering, this article introduces the deconstructive technique of "mind scripting" as a method for analyzing processes of the co-materialization of gender and technology and as a tool to support cooperative, reflective work practice…
