  • Political communication Modi style: A case study of the demonetization campaign on Twitter

    Usha M Rodrigues, Michael Niemann•ARTICLE•International Journal of Media…•2019•Cited by: 7•References: 6

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) is one of the world's most followed political leaders on Twitter. During the 2014 and 2019 election campaigns, he and his party used various social media networking and the Internet services to engage with young, educated, middle-class voters in India. Since his first sweeping win in the 2014 elections, Modi's political communication strategy has been to neglect the mainstream news media, and in…

  • Representation of news related to culturally diverse population in Australian media

    Open Access•Usha M Rodrigues, Michael Niemann et al.•ARTICLE•Journalism•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 3

The Australian media market has fragmented with audiences accessing news from various sources (mainstream media and/or social media) on a variety of platforms. In this fragmented market, we examine the media coverage of high-profile multicultural and transnational events and issues during a 6-month period, which potentially has adverse impact on social cohesion by contributing to negative attitudes towards minority communities. The article outlin…

  • The Democratic Republic of Congo: Economic Dimensions of War and Peace, Michael Nest

    Michael Niemann•ARTICLE•Africa Today•2007

  • War Making and State Making in Central Africa

    Michael Niemann•ARTICLE•Africa Today•2007•Cited by: 11•References: 25

Continued conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has resulted, not from the "failed-state syndrome," but from the continuing struggle to establish viable states on the ruins of repressive colonial states. Starting with Tilly's account of the process of statemaking in Europe, I argue that while control over resources and the means of violence is a crucially motivating factor, the largely forgotten questions of membership in political com…

  • Migration and the Lived Spaces of Southern Africa

    Open Access•Michael Niemann•ARTICLE•Alternatives Global Local Political•2003•Cited by: 1

When the Mail & Guardian reported on July 7, 1997, that two Mozambicans, a mother and child, had been devoured by lions in the Kruger National Park while their group tried to enter South Africa illegally, the story seemed to be little more than the perfunctory account of two lives lost in a part of the world that had seen more than its fair share of death. Park officials explained that about three hundred Mozambican refugees try to enter South Af…

  • The Everyday Spaces of Global Politics: Work, Leisure, Family

    Matt Davies, Michael Niemann•ARTICLE•New Political Science•2002•Cited by: 34•References: 8

Despite many innovative contributions to international relations theory over the past two decades, a “common sense” view of global politics continues to persist both in the field and in the arenas of public policy and opinion. This article investigates the origins of this persistence and offers an alternative framework for the analysis of global politics that considers international relations as social relations produced by a broad array of actor…

  • Southern Africa as Social Space

    Open Access•Michael Niemann•CHAPTER•Spatial Approach to Regionalisms…•2000

The previous chapter introduced a spatial approach to the emergence of the modern state which views this process as the spatial manifestation of specific social practices since the transition from the Middle Ages to modernity. This analysis has, so far, been grounded in the European experience. This focus is not an example of an unwitting Eurocentrism but to some extent a necessity since the modern form of the state was indeed pioneered in Europe…

  • Globalisation and regionalisation from a spatial perspective

    Michael Niemann•ARTICLE•Space and Polity•1998•References: 8

Much of the debate on globalisation has been framed in dichotomous terms which juxtaposes the national state, a fixed territorial unit, to a world increasingly characterised by global flows which disregard boundaries. I suggest an alternative approach which goes beyond ‘common sense’ notions of space and views it as a social construct consisting of multiple, temporally coexistent layers connected by zones of ambiguous permeability. Using this per…
