    Open Access•K Paerregaard•ARTICLE•kritisk etnografi Swedish Journal…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This article examines how water's transformative quality shapes Andean offering rituals and how these in turn perform the hydrological cycle as a metabolic process that involves humans as well as superhuman beings. It enquires into the offering practices of an Andean community providing an ethnographic account of its water management and the tributes it pays to the mountain and the springs that supply it with water.Building on the concept of water…

  • Water: An Anthropological Contribution

    Open Access•K Paerregaard, P Uimonen•ARTICLE•kritisk etnografi Swedish Journal…•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 3

At a time when humanity is facing an environmental crisis that threatens the very existence of our planet, a growing number of anthropologists are using their knowledge and skills to identify more sustainable forms of human coexistence with nature, not least water.Water is clearly essential for life on earth, from the seawater that covers over 70 per cent of the earth's surface, to the freshwater that sustains all forms of life even though it mak…

  • Communicating the Inevitable: Climate Awareness, Climate Discord, and Climate Research in Peru’s Highland Communities

    Open Access•K Paerregaard•ARTICLE•Environmental Communication•2020

The paper discusses how anthropology contributes to climate change research and communication. Building on theoretical works that highlight the cultural framing of communication it investigates the signs and symbols that a Peruvian highland community creates and the imaginaries and identities it generates to interpret and communicate climate change and its environmental impact. To explore the community’s communicative repertoire the paper explore…

  • Searching for the new human: Glacier melt, anthropogenic change, and self-reflection in Andean pilgrimage

    Open Access•K Paerregaard•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 17

Arguing in favor of anthropology's humanity-centered research tradition, this article examines how the encounter with human remains on the bedrock of retreating glaciers shapes not only the notion of divinity and power underpinning Andean pilgrimage but also the pilgrims' identity as a species. The article asks, how do the pilgrims account for their own and other humans' impact on Andean glaciers? How does the pilgrims' experience of anthropogeni…

  • Viewpoint Grasping the Fear: How Xenophobia Intersects with Climatephobia and Robotphobia and how their Co-production Creates Feelings of Abandonment, Self-pity and Destruction

    Open Access•K Paerregaard•ARTICLE•MIGRATION LETTERS•2019

The aim of this article is to discuss an issue that has been on my mind for several years: the fear that fuels the rightist populist movements in Europe and America. As we all know, xenophobia is at the heart of the political rhetoric of Lega in Italy, Vox in Spain, Rassemplement National in France, UKIP in UK, Die Freiheitspartei in Austria, Alternative für Deutschland in Germany, Vlaams Belang in Belgium, Partij voor de Vrijheid in Holland, the…

Analizando datos de trabajo de campo en una comunidad andina y su colonia de migrantes en los EE.UU. el artículo investiga las relaciones de ayni que los migrantes transnacionales utilizan para patrocinar las…

    Open Access•K Paerregaard, A B Stensrud et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2016•Cited by: 12

This article examines the implementation of Peru’s new water law and discusses how it produces new forms of water citizenship. Inspired by the global paradigm of “integrated water resources management,” the law aims to include all citizens in the management of the country’s water resources by embracing a “new water culture.” We ask what forms of water citizenship emerge from the new water law and how they engage with local water practices and aff…

  • Return to Sender: The Moral Economy of Peru's Migrant Remittances

    K Paerregaard•BOOK•Return to Sender•2015

This book is an anthropological account of how Peruvian emigrants raise and remit money and what that activity means for them and for their home communities. The book draws on first-hand ethnographic data from North and South America, Europe, and Japan to describe how Peruvians remit to relatives at home, collectively raise money to organize development projects in their regions of origin, and invest savings in business and other activities. The …

  • The resilience of migrant money: How gender, generation and class shape family remittances in Peruvian migration

    Open Access•K Paerregaard•ARTICLE•Global Networks•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 16

Scholars and policy makers have argued that because altruism drives remittance sending, migrant money is more resilient to uncertainty than other capital flows. In this article, I question this assumption through ethnographic examination of remittance sending by Peruvian migrant families. When in their lives do Peruvian migrants start to remit? Who are the recipients? What is the purpose of their remittances? How long do they last and why do they…

  • Movements, moments and moods. Generation as unity and strife in Peruvian migration

    K Paerregaard•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 21

This article discusses the meaning and use of generation in migration studies. It argues that the term is useful to examine how migrants create linkages between their pre- and post-migration lives. The article draws on Mannheim's notions of ‘generational units’ and ‘fresh contact’ to scrutinize how Peruvians engage resources from their previous lives in Peru to achieve social mobility in the USA, Japan, Spain and Argentina. In particular, the art…

Peruvian migrants surveyed share similar socio‐economic backgrounds and migrated to both countries for similar reasons roughly around the same time. Yet, over time, they achieved more occupational upward mobility in the US than in Japan. Japan h…

It demonstrates that their lives can only be understood when all ties of interdependence between the two groups are included in the analysis.
