The 'Cultural Life' of Democracy in Sri Lanka (And Beyond)
This forum brings together reflections on Sri Lanka’s recent political struggles (aragalya) that ousted the incumbent president, and yet ended in political stasis. These reflections provide the space to think through what makes up the ‘cultural life’ of democracy in aragalya and beyond. The trope of the ‘cultural life’ of democracy enables these contributions to sketch an alternative way of theorising democracy as ‘actually existing politics’

On university campuses in Sri Lanka, kuppi is the figurative term for a student-led informal study group led by a "smarter" or senior student. Informed by the complexities of university life, kuppi signifies a politics and pedagogy happening on the margins of the lecture hall. ‘Salt, Sand and Water’ is the outcome of a writing project that evolved out of a series of workshops in theatre and writing carried out in Sri Lanka over a period of three weeks in 2004.
