Development and validation of the parental influences on kids in computer science (PIK-CS) scale
While there are many studies promoting that children and their teachers learn to code, little is known about parents’ perceptions of coding being taught to children. In this study, we developed a research-grounded scale with 39 questions across five potential parental influences on children learning to code grounded in existing literature. We administered the scale with 300 parents whose children were participating in elementary schools where cod…
Becoming Equitable Educators: Practical Measures to Support Teachers' Dispositional Growth
Animating equity in teaching and learning depends on teacher dispositions-orientations to self, others, and society that underlie how we think and act. Teacher dispositions are virtues or qualities of moral character that modify the ways we interact with students and educator colleagues. Although interest in "measuring to improve" teaching and teacher education has grown recently, most measures lack validity evidence for practical usefulness. Int…

A Comparative Examination of Student Teacher and Intern Perceptions of Teaching Ability at the Preservice and Inservice Stages
This study investigates how the culminating teacher preparation program (TPP) experience (either student teaching assignment or internship) influences the perceptions teachers report about their ability to perform instructional tasks required of teachers. A multivariate ANOVA test ( N = 502) was conducted to compare perceptions of student teachers (those who taught 15 weeks) and interns (those who taught a full academic year) at two points in tim…
Effects of Dynamic Corrective Feedback on ESL Writing Accuracy
Though recent research has shown that written corrective feedback (WCF) may improve aspects of writing accuracy in some English as a second language (ESL) contexts, many teachers continue to be confused about the practical steps they should utilize to help their students improve their writing. Moreover, some have raised concerns as to whether commonly used approaches to ESL writing pedagogy and grammar instruction are effective in helping student…
Are Advanced Placement English and First-Year College Composition Equivalent? A Comparison of Outcomes in the Writing of Three Groups of Sophmore College Students
This study was conducted to obtain empirical data to inform policy decisions about exempting incoming students from a first-year composition (FYC) course on the basis of Advanced Placement (AP) English exam scores
Gender Differential Item Functioning in the Multidimensional Self Concept Scale With a Sample of Early Adolescent Students
Differential item functioning (DIF) in the Multidimensional Self Concept Scale (B. A. Bracken, 1992) was evaluated using 2 different methods to identify and describe DIF. Of 149 items from the Multidimensional Self Concept Scale. 42% exhibited gender DIF. Nonuniform, crossover DIF was evident in items throughout the instrument.
