    Open Access•Nelly Blanchard, Fañch Postic•ARTICLE•La Bretagne linguistique•2026

    Nelly Blanchard•ARTICLE•Studia Celto-Slavica•2023

In 1839, Viscount Théodore Hersart de La Villemarqué published the Barzaz-Breiz (The Popular Ballads of Brittany) at his own expense. He was only 24 years old at the time. This book would bring him fame, give him a name and was to influence all of his future work. The Barzaz-Breiz was then further developed and modified twice afterwards, in 1845 and 1867. To this day it remains one of the best known books in Breton language literature. There are …

  • Studi var an astrou (1848)

    Open Access•Nelly Blanchard•ARTICLE•La Bretagne linguistique•2022

  • The Breton Language Autobiography of Julien Godest (1905–13)

    Nelly Blanchard•ARTICLE•Studia Celto-Slavica•2021

Julien Godest (1849–33) was a farmer from Chapelle-Neuve and Callac in the Côtes-d’Armor (north-western Brittany). Unlike most of his fellow agricultural labourers, he was literate and, at some point between 1905–13, he wrote a 300-page autobiography in Breton. He had been solicited to undertake this task by François Jaffrennou (1879–1956), one of the key leaders of the Emsao movement. Godest began this long literary work to testify and to reflec…

    Open Access•Nelly Blanchard•ARTICLE•Nottingham French Studies•2021

Arguing that the concept of littérature-monde conceals unequal relations between literary cultures, this article examines the socio-economic contexts of literary translation from and into Breton from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century. The value of translation across the corpus of 1025 texts lies primarily in creating intercultural relationships and promoting cultural diversity. Translation into Breton represents a vital defence of a langu…

  • Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism in Europe

Joep Leerssen, Inge Adriansen et al.•BOOK•Encyclopedia of Romantic…•2018

This encyclopedia documents the presence and impact of nationalized cultural consciousness in European nationalism. It tracks how intellectuals, historians, philologists, novelists, poets, painters, folklorists, and composers, in an intensely collaborative transnational network, articulated the national identities and aspirations that would go on to determine European history and politics, with effects that are still felt today. Edited by Joep Le…
