Sans la liberté de flatter , il n'est pas d'éloge blâmeur: Jacques Martin and French television satire in the 1960s and 1970s
The comedian and television presenter Jacques Martin (1933-2007) is well-known to the French public even a quarter century after his disappearance from their screens. Despite having been the author/originator of many of the most watched and influential shows on French television in the 1960s, 1970s, and beyond, Martin is curiously little studied in academic literature, even though much of his work can be seen to prefigure later trends in televisi…
What is an international match? French football clubs and the earliest ‘international matches’
The article attempts to show the origins of international football in France in the 1890s, well before the founding of FIFA. It is a different type of international football that did not correspond to the exclusive model of ‘international matches’ as used in later official histories. Sources for this article are mainly newspapers of the time, including a rather neglected source, the European Edition of the New York Herald, whose coverage of the e…
France and the 1998 World Cup: The National Impact of a World Sporting Event
The Scotsman A new book, and the 1998 World cup is subtitled The National Impact of a World Sporting Event, and delivers a compelling and persuasive body of evidence to suggest 98 was a significant landmark in the countrys 20th century history. The New Statesman France and the 1998 World Cup is written in the flat, unexcitable style of a sociology textbook, yet it eschews jargon and has a curious readability. It is particularly good on how nation…
Cosmopolitanism united by electricity and sport: James Gordon Bennett Jnr and the Paris Herald as sites of internationalism and cultural mediation in belle époque France
Proprietor and director of the Paris Herald newspaper, James Gordon Bennett Jnr (1841−1918) was a key agent in the development of international sporting competitions during the belle époque, promoted and mediatised by the Herald. This international newspaper, managed by an American representative of a growing upper-class society of affluent expatriates in Europe, was a key site of ‘internationalism’, merging its owner’s fascination with sport and…

This collection of papers emerges from the activities of scholars clustered around Roger Ripoll and Anne-Simone Dufief within the Amis d'Alphonse Daudet. Annual colloquia usually take place in the shadow of Daudet's mill in Fontvieille, in the heart of the tourist Provence defined by Daudet's early writings. The…
The Tour De France, 1903-2003: A Century of Sporting Structures, Meanings and Values

World Cup France '98: Metaphors, Meanings and Values
The 1998 World Cup Finals focused the attention of the world on France. The cumulative television audience for the 64 matches was nearly 40 billion - the biggest ever audience for a single event. French political and economic decision-makers were very aware that for a month the eyes of the world were on France. On the night of 12 July, whether in Paris and other cities or in smaller communities all over France, there was an outpouring of joy and …
Towards demassification of French television in the 21st century
Digitalisation of communications, economic globalisation, and the convergence of broadcasting with the technologies of telecommunications and computing are changing the nature of broadcasting as a mass medium. This article reviews the extent and impact of digitalisation in French television, as well as associated audience practices of individualisation of consumption and interactivity, that suggest a nascent demassification of the broadcasting me…
French youth talk radio: The free market and free speech
French talk radio emerged in the mid-1990s as a form of programming which challenged accepted practices of French radio, especially when catering for youthful audiences who were attracted to cult radio programmes whose star presenters vied with each other to increase audience ratings. French youth talk radio has come into conflict with regulators over good taste and quality in programming, creating a wider debate over issues of censorship, cultur…

Dans la cour des grands’: France 98
France's hosting of the 1998 World Cup not only fits the French State's traditional use of international sporting events for asserting national grandeur, but suggests both a coming of age of French football itself, and more widely, a statement of national economic and political self‐confidence. France 98 may be seen as an example of the particular French relationship between public authorities and sport, in which Republican values pervade areas o…
