  • A Comparative Study on Apprenticeship Systems Using Agent-Based Simulation

Open Access•Amir Hosein Afshar Sedigh, Martin Purvis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2022

In this paper, we investigate the e ects of di erent characteristics of apprenticeship programmes both in historical and contemporary societies. Apprenticeship is one of the major means to transfer skills in a society. We consider five societies: the old Britain system (AD 1300s-1600s), the British East India Company (AD 1600s -1800s), Armenian merchants of New-Julfa (AD 1600s -1700s), contemporary German apprenticeship (1990s), and the "Modern A…

  • Direction and discretion: The roles of centre and branch in the interwar management of Marks and Spencer

    Martin Purvis•ARTICLE•History of Retailing and…•2015

The successful expansion of multiple retailing in interwar Britain is often seen to rest, in part, on the inculcation of efficient and uniform working practices throughout a company’s branch network. Major multiple retailers often placed considerable stress on codifying the standards expected of store managers and their staff; on creating systems of branch supervision and inspection by staff directly responsible to head office; and on the submiss…

  • Agent-Based Modeling of Information Transmission in Early Historic Trading

Open Access•Christopher Frantz, Martin Purvis et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This work introduces a multiagent model for informal communication about cheating merchants among investing Genoese traders in the 12th century. The model builds on previous, game theory focused work of Avner Greif and extends it by enabling communication between Genoese traders. A trust-based cooperation model is tested across different network topologies as well as two different communication modes: (a) a reactive one representing Genoese trade…

  • Obligation Norm Identification in Agent Societies

Open Access•Tony Savarimuthu, Stephen Cranefield et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2010

Most works on norms have investigated how norms are regulated using institutional mechanisms. Very few works have focused on how an agent may infer the norms of a society without the norm being explicitly given to the agent. This paper describes a mechanism for identifying one type of norm, an obligation norm. The Obligation Norm Inference (ONI) algorithm described in this paper makes use of an association rule mining approach to identify obligat…

  • Between late-lasting empire and late-developing nation-state: A Triestine perspective on city-state relations

    Martin Purvis•ARTICLE•Social & Cultural Geography•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 13

This paper adopts the case of Trieste to critique ideas that urban authority is always and inevitably surrendered to the state, arguing that the relationship between economic and political change may be more complex than is sometimes acknowledged. Trieste's origins as a multi-ethnic trading community were not a consequence of the absence of state authority, so much as Habsburg calculation of the potential economic advantages of a policy of tolera…

  • Performing wartime memories: Ceremony as contest at the Risiera di San Sabba death camp, Trieste

    Martin Purvis, David Atkinson•ARTICLE•Social & Cultural Geography•2009•Cited by: 7•References: 10

The paper examines contest over one of Trieste's most emotive sites of memory, the former Nazi death camp at the Risiera di San Sabba. Attention is paid to the Risiera as a site for ceremonial recollection of World War Two, and to the enmeshing of the local civic calendar of events within wider currents of academic and political revisionism affecting the upper Adriatic. The paper complements existing studies of former Nazi camps as memorial sites…

  • The Effect of Supersonic Transports on the Global Environment: A Debate Revisited

    Open Access•Frances Drake, Martin Purvis•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•2001•Cited by: 2•References: 25

Initial moves to develop a new generation of commercial supersonic transports (SSTs) to succeed Concorde are already under way. Aircraft manufacturers promise a plane that will withstand both economic and environmental scrutiny. Yet, the crash of an Air France Concorde at Paris in July 2000 has caused further doubts about the viability of SSTs. This study revisits the previous debate surrounding Concorde to explore the potential for current initi…

  • Stocking the Store: Co-operative Retailers in North–East England and Systems of Wholesale Supply circa 1860–77

    Martin Purvis•ARTICLE•Business History•1998•Cited by: 3

The essay examines wholesale purchasing by the retail stores of consumers' co-operatives in north-east England during their rapid initial growth between the early 1860s and the later 1870s. Drawing on society minute books and Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS) accounts, the complexity and variety of retail co-operatives' trading relations with both the private and co-operative sector are explored. Initially, in the absence of an accessible co-o…
