  • Mapping research on the social impact of the arts

Open Access•Sofia Lindström Sol, Cia Gustrén et al.•ARTICLE•Open Research Europe•2022

This article explores the broad and undefined research field of the social impact of the arts . The effects of art and culture are often used as justification for public funding, but the research on these interventions and their effects is unclear. Using a co-word analysis of over 10,000 articles published between 1990 and 2020, we examined the characteristics of the field as we have operationalised it through our searches. We found that since 20…

  • Artistic Freedom or the Hamper of Equality? Exploring Ethical Dilemmas in the Use of Artistic Freedom in a Cultural Organization in Sweden

Open Access•Janet Johansson, Sofia Lindström Sol•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Ethics•2022

With this paper, from the perspective of ethics at the workplace, we problematize the taken-for-granted assumptions embedded in the use of artistic freedom in creative processes. Drawing on the notion of inequality regimes (e.g. Acker, 2006) and using empirical material from a performing arts organization in Sweden, we explore how the assumptions of artistic freedom facilitate and legitimize the emergence of inequality regimes in invisible and su…

Through the Bookstart programme, librarians visit families in their homes to inform and instruct parents about reading books for their children to enhance language learning. The areas of the city chosen for intervention were described as socia…

  • Mobilising non-participant youth

    Open Access•David Ekholm, Sofia Lindström Sol•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 11

The role of sport and cultural practices in policy initiatives tends to be assessed in both cases in terms of their assumed social benefits. However, the areas of sport and culture are often understood separately in research. Through an analysis of interviews with key local policy-makers and civil servants in two Swedish municipalities, the aim of this article is to explore how sport and culture are formed as means to promote social policy object…

  • It usually works out, but you never know”. Emotion Work as a Strategy for Coping in the Insecure Artistic Career

    Open Access•Sofia Lindström Sol•ARTICLE•Culture Unbound Journal of…•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 18

This article explores how contemporary Swedish visual artists manage and make sense of career insecurity through emotion work. The specific emotions discussed in the material are trust, hope and luck. Emotion work is related to coping in an increasingly insecure world of work in late modern capitalism, which has been theorized as relying on the creativity, passion and subjectivity of workers. Through analysing what the artists anticipate of their…

  • Artists and Multiple Job Holding—Breadwinning Work as Mediating Between Bohemian and Entrepreneurial Identities and Behavior

Open Access•Sofia Lindström Sol, Sofia Lindström•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Working Life…•2016

Artists are known to manage low income and work insecurity by holding multiple jobs. Through an analysis of interview data, this study explores the narratives of 20 visual artists in Sweden regarding breadwinning work. Positive and negative experiences of such work are analyzed in relation to the artists’ work behavior and identity as either ‘bohemian’ or ‘entrepreneurial.’ Breadwinning work may be seen by artists as either enabling autonomy from…

  • Constructions of Professional Subjectivity at the Fine Arts College

Open Access•Sofia Lindström Sol, Sofia Lindström•ARTICLE•Professions and Professionalism•2015

Higher education can function as an important marker of seriousness in fields characterized by diffuse professional standards. Using the case of a fine arts institute, the article outlines the role of higher education in promoting the interconnection of a professional and individual subjectivity; being an artist is not merely something one does but something one is. By primarily examining interview material, it explores how an ideal position of i…
