  • Populism

    Open Access•Julia Fierman, R Cantave•ARTICLE•Open Encyclopedia of Anthropology•2025

Populism is a conception of political representation that views 'the people' as the primary political actor and the basis of political sovereignty. As populism does not refer to a specific ideology, ideologically diverse movements can fall under it. Thus, populism is not intrinsically conservative or progressive, left-wing or right-wing. However, populists' insistence that their movement, leader, and party should represent 'the people' puts popul…

  • Femme populism: Vulnerability and desire in Argentine political aesthetics

    Open Access•Julia Fierman•ARTICLE•Ethos•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 35

This article focuses on the role of vulnerability and desire in populist politics. I examine the political aesthetics of Argentine populism by analyzing media and supporters' representations of Argentine politician Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. The populist leader tends to conjure the image of the strongman who is either an avuncular man of the people or a muscular, industrious worker. In contrast, Kirchner's followers focus on her sexual appea…

  • We Are Peronists, We Are Organic: Discipline, Authority, and Loyalty in Argentine Populism

    Open Access•Julia Fierman, Julia Beth Fierman•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 19

Since 1945, Argentine politics has been largely defined by Peronism, a populist movement established by General Juan Perón. While the ideology of Peronism has shifted and swerved over its seven-decade history, its central emphasis on loyalty has remained constant. This paper examines the notion of "organicity" (organicidad), a Peronist conception of obedience, to elucidate how populist movements valorize discipline and loyalty in order to unify t…

  • There are traitors among us: On the Emotional Vicissitudes of Populist Politics

    Open Access•Julia Fierman•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Sociology•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 20

This article examines fellowship and accusations of betrayal among members of a populist movement in contemporary Argentina. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted among self-described "militants" of the Kirchnerist movement, a contemporary iteration of Peronism, this work makes a uniquely anthropological intervention into existing literature on populist politics, which tends to focus on populism's demonization of the enemy of "the people." …

  • I Embrace You with the Affection and Loyalty of Always: Personalism and Exchange in Argentine Populism

    Open Access•Julia Fierman•ARTICLE•The Journal of Latin American and…•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 18
