Mundane expertise
Scholarship on therapeutic implants has focused on contested forms of expertise, such as audiologists who privilege speech over deaf patients’ social worlds. Less attention has been paid to the mundane, yet consequential, forms of expertise required to implement novel implants in clinical practice, such as encouraging realistic expectations. This US-based ethnographic analysis of continuing care appointments for epilepsy shows how the mundane exp…
Differential Pace
This article reworks disability frameworks to account for the sustained denial of recognition and care experienced by many episodically disabled people. This reworking is grounded in an ethnographic examination of how people obtain an epilepsy diagnosis in the Midwestern United States. Diagnosis can be straightforward for people whose seizures are witnessed by other people or medical technologies and people who can access specialty care. Others r…
Historical Friction
This forum focuses on the conditions and futures of the labor underpinning technology production and maintenance. We welcome standalone articles as well as interviews and conversations about all tech labor within the global supply chain of digital technologies. --- Seyram Avle and Sarah Fox, Editors
Therapeutic value in the time of digital brainwaves
This article examines the value of medical technology through the case of electroencephalograms (EEGs), devices used to visualize brain activity and diagnose seizures. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, the article shows that EEGs are valued differently by patients and medical practitioners. While practitioners value EEGs for their clinical utility, i.e., ability to inform clinical decisions, patients value EEGs even in the absence of clinical ut…
Seizure aesthetics
Epilepsy is a neurological condition defined by time; it is characterized by a lifelong tendency for recurrent, unpredictable, and unprovoked seizures, during which people lose control over parts of body-mind function. Diagnosing seizures involves using electroencephalograms to represent and classify brain waves in relation to clock time. Drawing upon ethnographic fieldwork in a North American teaching hospital, this paper shows that as neurologi…
