Covert contraceptive use among women with a previous unintended pregnancy in Nigeria
Covert contraceptive use is a strategy to avoid unintended pregnancy. However, evidence regarding the multilevel factors linking past experiences of unintended pregnancy with covert contraceptive use is limited. The objective of this study was to identify the compositional and contextual factors associated with covert contraceptive use among women with a prior unintended pregnancy. Framed by the socio-ecological model, a cross-sectional study was…
Do women with a previous unintended birth subsequently experience missed opportunities for postpartum family planning counseling? A multilevel mixed effects analysis
Client-provider communication about family planning (FP) remains an important strategy for preventing unintended pregnancy. Yet, the literature lacks empirical studies examining whether and how women’s intendedness of a recent pregnancy may impact subsequent receipt of FP counseling. We investigated whether the intendedness of a recent pregnancy is associated with subsequent missed opportunities (MOs) for FP counseling, taking into account compos…
Association of Insomnia with 30-Day Postpartum Readmission
Insomnia is prevalent in pregnancy and is associated with increased use of health services. We aimed to evaluate the association between insomnia diagnosed at the delivery hospitalization and risk of 30-day postpartum readmission. We conducted a retrospective analysis of inpatient hospitalizations from the 2010-2019 Nationwide Readmissions Database. The primary exposure was a coded diagnosis of insomnia at delivery as determined by ICD-9-CM and I…
Race and Ethnicity Misclassification in Hospital Discharge Data and the Impact on Differences in Severe Maternal Morbidity Rates in Florida
Hospital discharge (HD) records contain important information that is used in public health and health care sectors. It is becoming increasingly common to rely mostly or exclusively on HD data to assess and monitor severe maternal morbidity (SMM) overall and by sociodemographic characteristics, including race and ethnicity. Limited studies have validated race and ethnicity in HD or provided estimates on the impact of assessing health differences …
Evaluation of Administrative Data for Identifying Maternal Opioid Use at Delivery in Florida
We observed high accuracy of maternal opioid-related diagnosis codes at delivery. However, our findings suggest that over 30% of mothers with opioid use may not be diagnosed with an opioid-related code at delivery, although their infant had a confirmed NAS diagnosis. This study provides information on the utility and accuracy of ICD-10-CM opioid-related codes at delivery among mothers of infants with NAS
Exploring challenges and opportunities in detecting emerging drug trends
This study highlights interconnected social, technical, and external environmental considerations for the design and implementation of a national substance use EWS in Canada. It also demonstrates the value of using the socio-technical systems framework to understand a complex public health surveillance issue and how it can be used to inform a path forward
Joint Effects of Socioeconomic Position, Race/Ethnicity, and Gender on Covid-19 Mortality among Working-Age Adults in the United States
Substantial racial/ethnic and gender disparities in COVID-19 mortality have been previously documented. However, few studies have investigated the impact of individual socioeconomic position (SEP) on these disparities. Objectives: To determine the joint effects of SEP, race/ethnicity, and gender on the burden of COVID-19 mortality. A secondary objective was to determine whether differences in opportunities for remote work were correlated with COV…

Out-of-Hospital Covid-19 Deaths
Objectives. To examine age and temporal trends in the proportion of COVID-19 deaths occurring out of hospital or in the emergency department and the proportion of all noninjury deaths assigned ill-defined causes in 2020. Methods. We analyzed newly released (March 2021) provisional COVID-19 death tabulations for the entire United States. Results. Children (younger than 18 years) were most likely (30.5%) and elders aged 64 to 74 years were least li…

Parenting style and perceptions of children’s weight among US Hispanics
Parental perceptions of their children's weight status may limit their willingness to participate in or acknowledge the importance of early interventions to prevent childhood obesity. This study aimed to examine potential differences in Hispanic mothers' and fathers' perceptions of childhood obesity, lifestyle behaviors and communication preferences to inform the development of culturally appropriate childhood obesity interventions. A qualitative…

P2-219 Racial/ethnic disparities in the timing of death during early childhood among children with congenital heart defects
Infants with congenital heart defects (CHD) have increased risk of childhood mortality; previous research indicates racial/ethnic differences in timing of death during infancy. However, less is known about racial/ethnic disparities in timing of death during early childhood. Texas Birth Defect Registry data were used in a retrospective cohort study of 19 406 singleton, live-born infants, born with a CHD between 1 January 1996 and 31 December 2003 …
