  • Spatial Distribution of Elemental Enrichments around Archaeological Sites

Open Access•Katrijn Dirix, Philippe Muchez et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Ancient human activities have resulted in important elemental enrichments in soils at archaeological sites. Nevertheless, the spatial extent of such elemental enrichment signals is rarely studied. Our research addresses this theme by studying the characteristics and extent of the geochemical enrichment halo around the monumental Colonnaded Street of the Hellenistic to Byzantine city of Sagalassos in southwest Turkey. Given the complex geology of …

  • Multi-element soil prospection aiding geophysical and archaeological survey on an archaeological site in suburban Sagalassos (SW-Turkey)

  • Urban-Rural Integration at Ancient Sagalassos (SW Turkey). Archaeological, Archaeozoological and Geochemical Evidence

  • Combined Pb-Sr isotopic analysis in provenancing late Roman iron raw materials in the territory of Sagalassos (SW Turkey)

    Open Access•P Degryse, Jens Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 12

In early Roman times, iron was likely supplied to the city of Sagalassos through the smelting of close-by hematite ores. In the early Byzantine period, magnetite-titanite placer sands in some instances could have been exploited for its iron. For the intermediate late Roman period, however, the source of the locally used iron was unknown. Pb and Sr isotopic analyses of iron ores from the area of Camoluk, just south of the territory of Sagalassos, …

  • A geochemical study of Roman to early Byzantine Glass from Sagalassos, South-west Turkey

    Open Access•P Degryse, J Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2004•Cited by: 9•References: 2

  • Two‐dimensional resistivity imaging

    Open Access•Dominique Similox‐Tohon, Kris Vanneste et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2003•Cited by: 5•References: 4

The ancient Pisidian town of Sagalassos (southwest Turkey) was struck by several earthquakes during Roman and early Byzantine times and was abandoned around the middle of the seventh century AD , partly as the result of a devastating earthquake. A nearby epicentre is postulated, although the causative fault has not yet been identified. The identification of such an active fault is, however, important with respect to the assessment of the seismic …
