  • What Makes Genesis Different

    Open Access•J R Miller•ARTICLE•Religions•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 2

In contrast to those who read Genesis 1 through 11 as myth, the story of Genesis is historical narrative with a theological purpose (theo-history). The Hebrew theo-history of creation was undergirded by a worldview that did not converge with her neighbors but significantly diverged from the surrounding nations. While the literary style of Genesis has elements common to other ancient mythologies, the content itself is quite distinct. Unlike other …

  • From Riel to the Métis

    Open Access•J R Miller•ARTICLE•Canadian Historical Review•2021

Although miscegenation must have been one of the earliest and most common effects of the expansion of Europe, its consequences have been relatively little studied by historians of Canada. Indeed, one of the few general histories of the western mixed-blood population suggests – only half-jokingly, one suspects – that the Métis people of Canada were founded nine months after the landing of the first European. Perhaps because of traditional historio…

  • Two Brownstowns

    J R Miller•ARTICLE•The American Review of Canadian…•2018

Histories of the War of 1812 have to date focused on heroic soldiers and battlefield exploits. An exploration of two small skirmishes illustrates not only how British and Americans claimed victory for one battle but also how brutal the actual war was for participants. Exploring the two small engagements at Maguaga and Brownstown indicates that the War of 1812 was a conflict characterized by brutal reciprocity, far removed from the celebrated nati…

Arthur Ray, Jim Miller, and Frank Tough draw on a wide range of documentary sources to provide a rich and complex interpretation of the process that led to these historic agreements. The authors explain how Saskatchewan treaties were shaped by long-standing First Nations' Hudson's Bay Company diplomatic and economic understandings, treaty practices developed in eastern Canada before the 1870s, and the changing economic and political realities of …

To determine if users of indoor firing ranges may be at risk from lead exposure, we studied a law enforcement trainee class during three months of firearms instruction. Blood lead levels were obtained before training and at four-week intervals during training. Air lead levels were measured three times during instruction. Blood lead levels rose from a pre-training mean of 0.31 mumol/L to 2.47 mumol/L. Mean air lead levels were above 2,000 microgra…

Nonsurvey input-output models, especially those constructed by means of pool and quotient techniques, are suspect when applied to the case of cross-hauling. This is well known. But the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, through its IMPLAN model, and the US Department of Commerce (USDC), through its RIMSII model, encourage the application of pool and quotient nonsurvey models in cases where cross-hauling is likely to occur. Even during his lifetime McCarthy was no stranger to public attacks, for, while his friends regarded him as 'a heroic nation-builder,' his opponents tended rather to view him as 'an irresponsible fanatic' who endangered the unity and stability of Canada in the last quarter of the nineteenth century?
