  • Pornography use and sexism among heterosexual men

Dan J Miller, Garry Kidd et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Research Reports•2020

The idea that pornography promotes sexism is a commonly purported one. This study employed an online sample of heterosexual men (N = 323) to investigate the relationship between pornography use (in terms of both overall level of pornography use and use of violent and/or humiliating pornography) and old-fashioned and modern sexism. The moderating effects of agreeableness and perceived realism of pornography were also assessed. Level of general por…

  • Pornography, preference for porn‐like sex, masturbation, and men's sexual and relationship satisfaction

    Open Access•Dan J Miller, Kerry A Mcbain et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2019

Pornography use, preference for “porn‐like” sex, masturbation, and sexual and relationship satisfaction were assessed among two samples of men ( N Study 1 = 326, N Study 2 = 335). Frequent pornography use was associated with sexual dissatisfaction, greater preference for porn‐like sex, and more frequent masturbation in both studies. Pornography use was associated with relationship dissatisfaction in Study 2 only. The data did not support the noti…

  • Positioning

    Open Access•Peter T F Raggatt, Peter Raggatt•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2015

The article combines discourse analysis and dialogical self theory to propose an integrated model of positioning processes in social interaction. The model incorporates social positioning—a focus for discursive psychology—with reflexive positioning—a focus for dialogical self theory. To illustrate the model, a fictionalized scenario is presented involving two people who meet for a date at a restaurant. The discursive dynamics of the scenario are …

  • Dialogic Formations

    Marie-Cécile Bertau, Miguel M Gonçalves et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Dialogic Formations•2012

This volume understands itself as an invitation to follow a fundamental shift in perspective, away from the self-contained ‘I’ of Western conventions, and towards a relational self, where development and change are contingent on otherness. In the framework of ‘Dialogical Self Theory’ (Hermans & Hermans-Konopka, 2010; Hermans & Gieser, 2012), it is precisely the forms of interaction and exchange with others and with the world that determine the co…

  • The Dialogical Self and Thirdness

    Open Access•Peter T F Raggatt, Peter Raggatt•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2010

The American pragmatist Charles Sanders Peirce described “Thirdness” as the influence of one subject on a second mediated by a third. In psychology the idea of Thirdness has been captured in a wide range of triadic models that draw on Peirce’s original insights about mediation. In this paper, links are developed between Peirce’s triadic approach to semiotics, accounts of the dialogical self as “multi-voiced,” and the role of “mediating objects” a…

  • Essay Review

    Open Access•Peter T F Raggatt, Peter Raggatt•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2010

This essay discusses the troubled history of the self in the social sciences in the light of two new books that examine the topic from different disciplinary perspectives—psychology and cultural sociology. The psychology text (Hermans & Hermans-Konopka) presents an impressive and wide-ranging elaboration of Dialogical Self Theory—an approach which conceptualizes the self as extended in both space and time. The sociology text (Illouz) examines the…

  • Forms of Positioning in the Dialogical Self

    Open Access•Peter T F Raggatt, Peter Raggatt•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2007

Notions of a `dialogical self' are finding application across many areas of psychology and beyond into neighbouring social sciences disciplines. This breadth, however, creates problems of overall coherence. When authors refer to a `dialogical self', they are not always talking about the same thing. In this paper I address this problem by considering theories of positioning . I argue that dialogical theory and positioning theory are closely inter-…

  • A Field Study of Stress and Fatigue in Long-Distance Bus Drivers

    Peter T F Raggatt, Peter Raggatt et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•1997

Psychophysiological changes during long-distance driving may be associated with driving fatigue and morbidity. Measures of stress and arousal, including heart rate, blood pressure, catecholamines, cortisol, state anxiety, and self-ratings of stress and arousal were collected from 10 long-distance bus drivers during 12-hour driving shifts and at matched times on nondriving rest days. Cardiovascular and catecholamine data were elevated across the e…

  • Work stress among long‐distance coach drivers

    Open Access•Peter T F Raggatt, Peter Raggatt•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•1991•Cited by: 2

This paper presents findings from an Australian survey of work conditions, coping behaviors and stress among 93 long‐distance coach drivers. A tripartite model of coach driver stress is presented. The model proposes that the impacts of job demands (e.g. driving hours) on work‐related stress outcomes (e.g. doctor visits) are mediated by a set of maladaptive coping behaviors and responses (e.g. stimulant use, speeding). Correlational analyses of th…

  • Trait anxiety and the cognitive representation of significant life events

    Open Access•Peter T F Raggatt, Peter Raggatt•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•1989•References: 9

This paper describes an exploratory investigation of Endler's person X situation model of trait anxiety using multidimensional scaling and related methods. The aim was to discover whether individual differences in “situation-specific” trait anxiety were related to differences in the way individuals cognitively represent significant life events. Thirty-four respondents provided brief descriptions of important personal experiences. These events wer…
