A Mobile App to Prevent Depression Among Low-Income Primary Care Patients in the Dominican Republic
Introduction: Mental health mobile apps (MHapps) can provide depression treatment to people worldwide who do not have access to care, but few apps are culturally targeted to the population. In this series of studies, we described sociocultural considerations of MHapp development, and we explored participants’ perceptions of acceptability, usability, and cultural relevance of the MHapp. Method: Individual interviews were conducted in three separat…
Stigma About Mental Illness Among Multidisciplinary Health Care Providers in the Dominican Republic
Few studies have examined the attitudes of multidisciplinary health care providers toward mental illness, particularly in Latin America. The present study explored the attitudes of health care providers in the Dominican Republic (DR) toward persons with mental illness. Five Spanish-language focus groups were conducted in different regions of the DR with a purposive sample of 37 multidisciplinary health care providers and administrators. We found …
Mental health services in the Dominican Republic from the perspective of health care providers
This study examines mental health services in five different regions of the Dominican Republic (DR) from the perspectives of health care providers. The purpose of this research was to (1) examine existing mental health care services; (2) identify barriers to treatment and mental health services delivery; and (3) explore potential strategies to improve mental health services delivery. Thirty-seven health care workers including physicians, nurses, …

Depression, Help-Seeking and Self-Recognition of Depression among Dominican, Ecuadorian and Colombian Immigrant Primary Care Patients in the Northeastern United States
Latinos, the largest minority group in the United States, experience mental health disparities, which include decreased access to care, lower quality of care and diminished treatment engagement. The purpose of this cross-sectional study of 177 Latino immigrants in primary care is to identify demographic factors, attitudes and beliefs, such as stigma, perceived stress, and ethnic identity that are associated with depression, help-seeking and self-…
Cultural Influences on Causal Beliefs About Depression Among Latino Immigrants
Purpose: This study describes causal beliefs about depression among Dominican, Colombian, and Ecuadorian immigrants. The authors describe participants’ narratives about how particular supernatural or religious beliefs may contribute to or alleviate depression. Method: Latino primary care patients ( n = 177) were interviewed with the Beliefs About Causes of Depression Scale, a list of 35 items rated from not at all important to extremely important…
Correlates of religious, supernatural and psychosocial causal beliefs about depression among Latino immigrants in primary care
The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore causal attributions about depression and to identify psychosocial factors associated with these beliefs among Latino immigrants. We interviewed 177 primary care patients with instruments to assess causal beliefs, depressive and somatic symptoms, ethnic identity and stigma. An exploratory factor analysis of the Causal Beliefs scale yielded three factors, “Balance,” “Psychosocial” and “Malevo…
Problematic Internet use and psychosocial well-being among MMO players
Looking for Gender
Several hypotheses regarding the importance of gender and relationships were tested by combining a large survey dataset with unobtrusive behavioral data from 1 year of play. Consistent with expectations, males played for achievement-oriented reasons and were more aggressive, especially within romantic relationships where both partners played. Female players in such relationships had higher general happiness than their male counterparts. Contrary …
Latinos, Acculturation, and Acculturative Stress
Background: Acculturation can be conceived of as a process of adaptation to stressful changes. In the field of public health, research indicates that recently arrived Latino immigrants, presumably most affected by acculturative stress, have better health outcomes than those who have spent greater time in the United States. This “immigrant paradox” is not well understood but supports the distinction between the process of acculturation and accultu…
Can You Hear Me Now? The Impact of Voice in an Online Gaming Community
This paper reports the results of a controlled field experiment in which voice communication was introduced into an existing online community (online gaming guilds within the popular game ''World of Warcraft''), comparing a mix of voice and text with text only. Quantitative results suggest increases in liking and trust due to the addition of voice, as well as insulation from unexpected negative impacts of text-only play. The findings are discusse…
