  • Navigating Complexity

Open Access•Emma O Lundberg, Audrey Ozanne et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Health•2025

Through discourse analysis of focus groups, this study investigates how palliative care professionals in Sweden engage with “spiritual care,” “religion” and “spirituality.” Our results reveal a common assumption that religion is “visible,” but at the same time private. Furthermore, we observed a secular and nonreligious positioning, marked by frequent "us versus them" rhetoric, especially in discussions about truth telling. The findings illustrat…

  • Performative Animism

    Open Access•D Enstedt, Jessica Moberg•ARTICLE•Method & Theory in the Study of…•2023•Referências: 11

In this article we suggest a shift to a performative perspective on animism. After identifying problems with essentialism, agency, and the object/subject dichotomy in previous animism studies, we engage with posthumanist theorists and bring in perspectives from new materialism and ritual studies. From the perspectives we suggest, performative animism exists in a variety of contexts, which should be acknowledged even when studying “religion.” Perf…

The aim of this article is to examine how norms and values related to culture, religion, and spirituality were experienced and expressed by healthcare professionals caring for patients at the end of life in Advanced Care at Home (ACH) in Sweden, with a focus on how organisational aspects enabled or hindered spiritual care. Founded on participant observation with physicians and exploratory short-term fieldwork conducted between June and December 2…

  • Transforming Personal Death into Public Martyrdom

Open Access•D Enstedt, Giulia Giubergia•ARTICLE•Culture Unbound Journal of…•2023

This article examines ways to analyze and understand the social and cultural transformation that occurred after the 2011 uprising in downtown Cairo. We argue for a cultural sociological perspective using a renewed version of the concept 'the sacred' for analysis. Visual material - graffiti and murals on the walls of Cairo - is discussed in relation to the process of transforming the death of an individual into collective martyrdom. The role of so…

    D Enstedt•ARTICLE•Contemporary French Civilization•2022

Research on apostasy has previously focused on leaving Christianity, and to some extent Judaism and New Religious Movements (so called “cults”), in the North-Atlantic hemisphere. In addition, most previous studies have been conducted in an English-speaking context, thus excluding possible insights from other linguistic and cultural contexts. More recent theoretical developments in apostasy research questions the linear understanding of the proces…

  • A Response to Wolfart’s “Religious Literacy”

    Open Access•D Enstedt•ARTICLE•Method & Theory in the Study of…•2022•Referências: 4

This text addresses three related aspects of Wolfart’s article on religious literacy: the critique of assumptions on the outcome of increased religious literacy, questions about the purpose of religious education, and the suggestion that religious studies are ex-theological. Although the predictability of the results of certain classroom activities presents a fundamental problem, I argue that the tentative and generic abilities highlighted in the…

  • Education and Risk

    Open Access•D Enstedt, Ingrid Lindell•ARTICLE•Educational Theory•2020

What is the purpose of an education in the humanities? Even though this is a truly important and fundamental question for educators in the field, it also harbors superstitions based on misconceptions regarding what comprises the humanistic realm. This issue, therefore, touches the very core of the raison d'être for education in the humanities. The answers could be based on a more instrumental educational view, for instance, that you need a higher…

  • (Re)thinking Religious Studies

    Open Access•D Enstedt•ARTICLE•Educational Theory•2020

The world religions paradigm (WRP), often regarded as hegemonic in research and education in religious studies, has long been criticized for being modeled on predominantly Protestant, Christian, and Western ideas about religion, and thus running the risk of reductionism and of a failure to recognize expressions of religion that do not fit this framework. Despite this, it is difficult to get rid of the prevailing WRP, especially in education. In a…

Atefeh Aghaee, Mona Alyedreessy et al.•BOOK•Moving in and Out of Islam•2018

With empirical case studies from Western and Central Europe, the United States, Canada, and the Middle East, this anthology opens a new field of study by exploring people’s rationales for leaving, as well as converting to, Islam.

  • Personal Utopia

This article examines the discourse of the 'good life' in popular religion and literature in contemporary Sweden. The results indicate thnew spiritual movements (e.g. mindfulness and the Enneagram) situate traditional transcendental goals within the individual, immanent self and the utopian ideals (e.g. individual wellbeing and happiness) expressed in popular literature are to be achieved through changing individuals' attitudes rather than their …

  • Blessing same-sex unions and the invention of a ‘genuine homosexuality’ in the Church of Sweden

    Open Access•D Enstedt•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2015

The Church of Sweden decided to introduce a blessing ceremony for same-sex couples in 2005. This article examines how the blessing ceremony was made possible by the invention of a new ‘genuine’ homosexuality. Theological issues concerning ‘sin’, ‘grace’, eschatology, ‘God’, anthropology and the status of the Bible and historical texts came to be understood and articulated in new ways when the idea of ‘genuine’ homosexuality began to be discussed …
