  • Slovenske narodnozabavne zasedbe na družbenih omrežjih

    Open Access•Peter Stanković•ARTICLE•Two Homelands•2023•References: 5

  • The Disappearance of Political Jokes in Post-Socialist Slovenia

    Primož Mlačnik, Peter Stanković•ARTICLE•Communist and Post-Communist…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 6

In the decades since the fall of socialism, political jokes seemed to have lost their significance in Slovenia. In order to confirm and understand this change, we collected a sample of 200 jokes from five of the most popular Slovenian Facebook groups and analyzed the jokes and their targets. The results show that political jokes have indeed largely disappeared from the Slovenian public sphere: only three of the jokes in the sample target politici…

  • Rustic obsessions

    Open Access•Peter Stanković•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The article explores the relationship between Slovenian national identity and popular music. A substantial empirical research (150 interviewees from 4 different Slovenian regions) has been conducted to find out what kind of music Slovenians themselves perceive as typically Slovenian and what are for them the defining characteristics of these music acts or styles. The results show that the vast majority of interviewees understand as typically Slov…

  • When alternative ends up as mainstream

    Peter Stanković•ARTICLE•International Journal of Heritage…•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 7

One of the basic questions in cultural heritage studies is the relationship between accepted definitions of national cultural heritage and social power. In the case of Slovene popular music heritage, however, things are more complicated. Namely, the whole field is poorly organised, which means that the most influential work on Slovenian popular music heritage is not done by the institutions that are at least nominally in charge of this segment of…

  • Culinary Practices in Nove Fužine

    Peter Stanković, Luka Zevnik•ARTICLE•Food Culture & Society•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 5

In the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana, the suburb of Nove Fužine hosts the highest proportion of first and second-generation immigrants from the other former Yugoslav socialist republics. While this makes it a privileged signifier of “Balkanness,” it is also a place around which many negative stereotypes are constructed. This paper describes a survey that was conducted to discern cultural differences between the biggest three ethnic groups in the…

  • Toward a Slovene Cultural Studies

    Peter Stanković•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2010

Given the large amount of completed research and the existence of several undergraduate and graduate programs, we can say that cultural studies is currently well established in Slovenia, especially considering the relative size of the country and the newness of the discipline. Within this context, however, it is possible to see that most research merely borrows and applies concepts and rudimentary studies developed in other countries, primarily i…

  • Sport, Nationalism and the Shifting Meanings of Soccer in Slovenia

    Open Access•Peter Stanković•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2004•Cited by: 7•References: 1

So many different meanings have been attributed to the game of soccer in recent decades in Slovenia that it is difficult to believe they are just a reflection of the varying fortunes of Slovenian clubs and, later, of its national team. Taking this observation as a point of departure, the author scrutinizes the most important shifts in the meaning of soccer in the country, arguing that they have more to do with the existing relations of power betw…

  • Appropriating 'Balkan

    Open Access•Peter Stanković•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2001•Cited by: 2

The article raises questions regarding the relations between rock music and nationalism in former Yugoslavia. The author argues that Yu rock music and culture have with their universal allegiances helped to preserve a degree of sane distance from the feverish outbursts of nationalisms among the significant part of the country's youth during the years of nationalist wars between its former federal republics, meaning that it is possible to understa…
