  • Viral forgetting, or how to have ignorance in a syndemic

Open Access•Peter Hegarty, Judith Rollins et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2021

This paper argues for the concept of viral forgetting to understand how and why the lessons of HIV were not easy to remember in the context of COVID. Building on recently drawn analogies between the two epidemics, we argue that new normative injunctions to 'flatten the curve' and 'stay at home' individualise responses to COVID that make memory of the first decade of HIV vital in recent viral times. Individualistic responses, including those that …

  • Base, superstructure, Underworld: Marxism and post-Marxism in Don DeLillo's Fin de Siecle fiction

    Judith Rollins•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2020

This paper argues that Don DeLillo’s 1997 novel Underworld represents a concerted attempt on the author’s behalf to situate himself in relation to the post-Marxist debates of the 1990s. First arguing that, contrary to popular accounts of the period, the 1990s represented a moment of intense debate regarding the future of Marxism in the twenty-first century, I read DeLillo’s novel as an exercise in working through various issues pertinent to post-…

Over two decades ago, anthropologist Gayle Rubin began a now-classic article with a deceptively simple declaration: “The time has come to think about sex” (1984). Although Rubin was not the first thinker to place sex at the center of her work, her systematic sketch of Western sexual ideology made it possible to think about the political ramifications of sex in new and productive ways by disentangling the physical acts of sex from gender and sexua…

  • Embargoed Sexuality: Rape and the Gender of Citizenship in American Immigration Law

    Open Access•Judith Rollins, Joe Rollins•ARTICLE•Politics & Gender•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Immigrants seeking asylum in the United States face an unpredictable area of the law. Nonetheless, gay male applicants for asylum seem more likely to succeed if they present evidence of persecution that includes allegations of rape; gay Asian immigrants are less likely than other men to be granted refugee status even when they report having been victims of rape. These two findings suggest that immigration judges, officials with the Bureau of Immi…

  • Same-Sex Unions and the Spectacles of Recognition

    Open Access•Judith Rollins, Joe Rollins•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•2005•Cited by: 5•References: 18

The boundary between homo- and heterosexuality once stood solidly in our cultural imagination, marked off by a set of assumed differences that were purportedly made manifest in real, material ways. Gays and lesbians, so the story went, were verifiably different from straight people, but gradually, the perceived boundary between the two sexualities has eroded. It has been 30 years since the American Psychological Association cured us of our homose…

    Open Access•Judith Rollins, Joe Rollins•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•2002•Cited by: 12•References: 30

Models of judicial decisionmaking have traditionally relied on legal, political, and contextual variables, emphasizing judges' background, litigants' rights claims, and the relative social status of the parties involved. A recent scholarly expansion has brought cultural variables into the equation, indicating that judicial scholarship might usefully include narrative and rhetoric as measures of legal consciousness. This project examines AIDS-rela…
