U rmi E ngineer W illoughby . Yellow Fever, Race, and Ecology in Nineteenth-Century New Orleans
Long an interest of medical historians, the history of disease has recently been placed into more complex biological and social contexts. However, our growing specialization frequently inhibits and even denigrates the composition of broader, multidisciplinary narratives. Historicists insist that disease is merely a social construction, even questioning the scientific identification of particular diseases. Yet humans remain inextricably linked and…
Bringing DNA into the Neighborhood” in San Francisco: A Personal Recollection
Based primarily on personal experiences, this article aims to illustrate the troublesome relationship between the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and its adjoining neighborhoods from the 1960s to the present. Like other University of California campuses, UCSF was not required to conform to local land uses and zoning laws. Only its periodic and mandatory Long Range Development Plans provided clues about future research initiatives …

Glimpses of a Hidden Burden: Hydatid Disease in Eighteenth-Century Scotland
Hydatids" or watery cysts have been observed in animals and humans since ancient times, giving rise to frequent speculation as to their nature and origin. This essay focuses on an extremely rare clinical case managed at the Edinburgh Infirmary in 1785 by James Gregory, professor of the theory of medicine. Following the death of the patient, an autopsy disclosed lesions characteristic of a condition eventually labeled "echinococcosis of the liver,…

Contagious Divides: Epidemics and Race in San Francisco's Chinatown (review)
This informative book illuminates an important chapter in the history of American culture. As the author explains, a society on the path to modernity engages in a process of standardization and the setting of norms that guide its governance and policies—including the adjudication of what constitutes true citizenship. To illuminate this process, Nayan Shah analyzes in great detail the construction of racism toward the Chinese in San Francisco from…
Die Eroberung der Gesundheit, 1750-1900: Aus dem Französischen von Andrea van Dülmen (review)
For general readers interested in health issues, this historical overview may be of interest. It was originally written in French, and the current German translation in a series on European history reflects the growing importance of the subject in social historiography. The dense prose covers a span of 150 years, from mid-eighteenth-century Enlightenment to 1900, describing the "conquest" of health within the contexts of a dramatic demographic ex…
The Clinical Consultations of Francesco Torti (review)
Saul Jarcho's contributions to our understanding of clinical medicine in eighteenth-century Italy are well known. During the past decades he has uncovered and then meticulously translated case books, consultation letters, reports, and essays written by some notable physicians, including Lancisi, Albertini, and now Francesco Torti (1658-1741). A graduate of the University of Bologna, Torti returned to his alma mater as professor of medicine and to…

Health and Healing in Eighteenth-Century Germany
Medical history has shifted focus from the accomplishments of great doctors and nurses to a closer examination of the cultural context in which all health-related activities necessarily take place. The view "from below" prominently involves patients and their families as well as less formal healing networks populated by individuals often branded as opportunistic quacks or magicians. This form of cultural history is difficult to research and write…
Institutions of Confinement: Hospitals, Asylums, and Prisons in Western Europe and North America, 1500–1950
A major interdisciplinary study of the development of prisons, hospitals and insane asylums in America and Europe, this book resulted from discussions between its two editors about their work on the history of hospitals, poor relief, deviance, and crime, and a subsequent conference held in 1992 by the German Historical Institute that attempted to assess the impacts of Foucault and Elias.
