  • The Disappearing Technology and Products of Traditional Tibetan Village Blacksmiths

    Open Access•Chandra L Reedy•ARTICLE•Heritage•2024•References: 3

Tibetans have a long history of iron mining, smelting, and forging. For centuries, craftsmen in major cities and large iron production centers made high-quality swords and suits of armor, as well as decorative iron ritual objects for monasteries and the elites, but blacksmithing workshops in small villages have always produced and repaired everyday objects for agricultural and home use. Modern political changes, along with greater availability of…

  • Black coal cinder ceramics: An unusual technological choice in Sichuan Province, China

    Open Access•Chandra L Reedy•ARTICLE•Spotlight•2023

In Sichuan Province, China, many workshops on the historic pottery street of Yingjing and one small one in Gaoxian produce black pottery by adding ground coal cinders to their clay. This unique raw material is fired with a kiln design and process that are also unique. Coarse-grained cooking products are most common, but fine-grained teawares and other new product lines recently emerged in Yingjing to meet new market niches. High-temperature phase…

  • Image Analysis in Quantitative Particle Studies of Archaeological Ceramic Thin Sections

    Open Access•Chandra L Reedy, Jenifer Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2014•Cited by: 13•References: 6

Thin-section petrography is a crucial tool for the study of archaeological ceramics, and in recent years, image analysis has emerged as a powerful quantitative enhancement of that tool. Exploratory applications of image analysis to archaeological ceramic thin sections, and related work by sedimentary geologists, have indicated its usefulness to the field. In this paper, we first present the results of experimental work testing the consistency and…

  • Statistical Analysis in Conservation Science

    Open Access•Terry J Reedy, Chandra L Reedy•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1994

Statistical methods in conservation science are reviewed, with an emphasis on deterioration and treatment studies. A survey of all articles published in two major conservation journals during the period 1981–1992 shows that less than one-third of the papers reported any statistical analysis; most that did included only simple descriptive statistics. Basic components of experimental design that impact subsequent data analysis and interpretation ar…

  • Interdisciplinary Research on the Provenance of Eastern Indian Bronzes: Preliminary Findings

    Janice Leoshko, Chandra L Reedy•ARTICLE•South Asian Studies•1994•References: 4

  • Relating visual and technological styles in Tibetan sculpture analysis

    Chandra L Reedy, Terry J Reedy•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1994•Cited by: 7•References: 8

Traditional methods of stylistic analysis currently applied by art historians can be augmented to include technological choices made by artists regarding materials and techniques of production, and how those choices are related to the appearance and function of the products. One framework for analyzing style is to divide it into three components. Visual factors involve application of choices within a given material and technique, and affect the i…

  • Religious and Ethical Issues in the Study and Conservation of of Tibetan Sculpture

    Chandra L Reedy•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Institute…•1992

Sculptures serve a variety of functions within Tibetan religious practices. They aid the practitioner in meditation, communicate meditative insight, and provide the donors with a means for gaining spiritual merit. Many images were never intended to be viewed by those not initiated into the meditative practice for the deity represented. Practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism have mixed emotions about the propriety of public museum exhibition of certain…

  • Statistical Analysis in Iconographic Interpretation: The Function of Mudras at Tapho, A Tibetan Buddhist Monastery

    Open Access•Chandra L Reedy, Terry J Reedy•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1987•Cited by: 1•References: 2

A Statistical analysis of iconographic elements can help elucidate the syntax rules within a complex iconographic system. We tested this hypothesis by analyzing the mudras (hand gestures) found on a group of 11th-century clay sculptures at the Tibetan Buddhist monastery of Tapho in Himachal Pradesh, India. The mudras were found to have significant associations with other iconographic elements-in particular, deity type. They could have been used t…
