The correlation of national, supranational, trans-regional, and internationallegal systems is a concern of comparative legal (including their political science andinternational relations aspects) studies because it has decisive influence on how Statesposition themselves within the family of nations, perceive themselves in the surroundingworld community, and build relations with other nations, international organizations, and the international comm…

  • The British Soldier is no Bolshevik”: The British Army, Discipline, and the Demobilization Strikes of 1919

Open Access•William Butler, William B Butler et al.•ARTICLE•Twentieth Century British History•2018

This article considers the breakdown in discipline in the British Army which occurred in Britain and on the Western Front during the process of demobilization at the end of the First World War. Many soldiers, retained in the army immediately after the Armistice, went on strike, and some formed elected committees, demanding their swifter return to civilian life. Their perception was that the existing demobilization system was unjust, and men were …

  • The formation of the Ulster Home Guard

    Open Access•William Butler, William B Butler•ARTICLE•Irish Historical Studies•2016•References: 5

This article explores the problems encountered in the formation of the Ulster Home Guard, supposedly a direct equivalent to its well-known British counterpart, as part of the paramilitary Ulster Special Constabulary in Northern Ireland, during the Second World War. Predictably, the Ulster Home Guard became an almost exclusively Protestant organisation which led to many accusations of sectarianism from a variety of different national and internati…

William Butler, William B Butler•BOOK•Irish Amateur Military Tradition…•2016•Cited by: 2

This work examines the 'amateur military tradition' in Ireland, essentially the framework in which part-time soldiers of the British Army existed, alongside their regular army counterparts, and how they interacted with wider society. In Ireland, this included the militia, yeomanry, Territorial Force (later Army), Officers' Training Corps, Volunteer Training Corps, the Ulster Home Guard (UHG), and the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR). It covers the p…

  • Narrating Resilience: Transforming Urban Systems Through Collaborative Storytelling

Open Access•Bruce Evan Goldstein, Anne Taufen Wessells et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2015•Cited by: 16•References: 38

How can communities enhance social-ecological resilience within complex urban systems? Drawing on a new urbanist proposal in Orange County, California, it is suggested that planning that ignores diverse ways of knowing undermines the experience and shared meaning of those living in a city. The paper then describes how narratives lay at the core of efforts to reintegrate the Los Angeles River into the life of the city and the US Fire Learning Netw…

    Open Access•Robert Kunzendorf, Robert G Kunzendorf et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1986

The present smdy focuses on the sntistical association between depression and immune deficiency. In explaining this association, Schwartz (1983) maintains that depression stems from repression and that repression disrupts the neuroimmune system. In contrast, Becker (1973) argues that the depressive person does not repress feelings of meaninglessness, and Simonton, Matthews-Simonton, and Creighton (1978) argue that the desire not to live a meaning…
