  • Consumption of Soft Drinks and Other Sweet Drinks by Wic Infants

Margaret F Mccann, Nazli Baydar et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2008•References: 8

The Journal has published numerous articles on consumption of soft drinks and other sweet drinks by children,1–4 but none of these articles has reported on infants. Papers published elsewhere on complementary feeding of infants have seldom considered these beverages. The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Infant Feeding Practices Study,5,6 a nationally representative 1-year longitudinal study carried out in the mid-1990s, found high levels of con…

  • Perceived Insufficient Milk as a Barrier to Optimal Infant Feeding

    Open Access•Margaret F Mccann, Deborah E Bender•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2006

In its recently adopted Global Strategy on Infant and Young Child Feeding, the World Health Assembly called for urgent action in addressing the barriers to optimal feeding practices. This paper examines mothers’ concerns about milk insufficiency as a major contributor to suboptimal infant feeding decisions, using survey data from periurban areas of two Bolivian cities. Mothers in the lowland modernizing city of Santa Cruz were more likely than mo…

  • Neonatal feeding practices in Periurban Bolivia

Margaret F Mccann, Deborah E Bender et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•1999

Early initiation of breastfeeding offers numerous benefits, but in many cultures the first suckling is delayed and the infant is instead given various prelacteal foods. Mothers residing in periurban areas of two Bolivian cities were interviewed regarding their neonatal feeding practices. Virtually all infants were breastfed, but the first breastfeed was typically delayed for more than 1–2 hours after birth; about 15% did not suckle for at least 2…

  • From Efficacy to Effectiveness

Open Access•Deborah E Bender, Erin Dusch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1998

This paper reviews the results of clinical trials and community studies of lactational amenorrhoea and its role as a contraceptive method (LAM). Indicators which are used in efficacy trials and effectiveness interventions are compared and sets of indicators of effectiveness appropriate to community-based LAM programmes are recommended. A five-tiered ecological framework is used to facilitate selection of indicators which range from individual to …

  • Cotinine concentrations in semen, urine, and blood of smokers and nonsmokers

    M F Vine, B S Hulka et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•References: 5

Cotinine levels in the semen, urine, and blood of 88 male smokers and nonsmokers, aged 18 to 35, were analyzed via radioimmunoassay. Detectable cotinine levels were found in all three body fluids, and cotinine levels in all three fluids were highly correlated. Cotinine levels in semen and blood were of similar magnitude; cotinine levels in urine were an order of magnitude or more higher. In all three fluids, cotinine levels increased with an incr…

  • Effects of Breastfeeding on IUD Performance

Lynda Painter Cole, Margaret F Mccann et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1983•Cited by: 2•References: 10

The effect that lactation might have on intrauterine device (IUD) performance was investigated by using data from a series of multicenter clinical trials. Life-table methods were applied to compare breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding women with respect to IUD expulsion, accidental pregnancy, IUD removal for various reasons, and overall continuation of IUD use. Results indicate that breastfeeding does not increase the risk of expulsion or other ev…

  • Laparoscopy and Minilaparotomy

Margaret F Mccann, Lynda Painter Cole•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1980

Laparoscopy and minilaparotomy have contributed significantly to the rapidly escalating popularity of female sterilization. This paper reviews these procedures and personnel requirements and compares their safety and efficacy, using data collected by the International Fertility Research Program. It concludes that minilaparotomy with the ligation method of tubal occlusion is the surgical sterilization procedure that can be offered practically, saf…

  • Advances in Sterilization Equipment

Margaret F Mccann, Margaret M Morrow et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1978

From the array of sterilization procedures that are safe and effective the service provider must select procedures that fit their logistical criteria which include the cost and maintenance of equipment availability of supplies and training of the requisite personnel. These criteria are discussed for each of the following sterilization procedures: conventional postpartum laparotomy minilaparotomy colpotomy laparoscopy and culdoscopy together with …
