  • The Sexual Desire Inventory as a Measure of Sexual Motivation in College Students

Open Access•B King, Brian Edward King et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2000

The human sexual response consists of at least two phases of behavior, the motivational phase and the consummatory phase, which are difficult to isolate. Sexual motivation questionnaires commonly contain items that assume sexual intercourse or partners' experience and are often difficult to use with sexually inexperienced persons. The Sexual Desire Inventory by Spector, Carey, and Steinberg does not appear to be confounded with consummatory behav…

  • Looking deeper: Extradyadic behaviors, jealousy, and perceived unfaithfulness in hypothetical dating relationships

Open Access•Paul E Yarab, Elizabeth Rice Allgeier et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•1999

This report expands on past research dealing with extradyadic (ED) relations in dating relationships by examining behaviors beyond those of a strictly sexual or romantic nature that college‐age men and women consider to be unfaithful. Undergraduates ( N = 219) from a U.S. university rated a hypothetical partner's ED sexual behavior, sexual fantasies, romantic attachments, flirting, group, and dyadic social activities including a member of the oth…

  • Feigning sexual desire: Consenting to unwanted sexual activity in heterosexual dating relationships

    Lucia F O’sulliban, Lucia F O'Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1998•Cited by: 109•References: 1

The prevalence rates of unwanted sexual activity indicate that a substantial proportion of both men and women are at risk for experiencing unwanted (nonconsensual) sexual activity. However, little is known about the extent to which men and women consent to unwanted sexual activity, such as when a person indicates willingness to engage in a sexual activity at a time when he or she experiences no sexual desire. In the current study, 80 male and 80 …

  • Over-Confidence and under-Performance: Men's Perceived Accuracy and Actual Performance in a Course

Open Access•Paul E Yarab, Christine Cregan Sensibaugh et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1997

The confidence and actual performance of 121 undergraduates in general social psychological knowledge was examined in an applied setting on a pretest measure and first examination score. Men indicated higher confidence in their performance on the pretest measure than women. Men overestimated and women underestimated their performance, although men's and women's scores were not different. However, women scored higher than men on the class examinat…

  • Factors Considered by Ohio Juvenile Court Judges in Judicial Bypass Judgments: A Policy-Capturing Approach

Open Access•Christine Cregan Sensibaugh, Elizabeth Rice Allgeier•ARTICLE•Politics and the Life Sciences•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Judicial bypass is a procedure by which a minor can bypass notification of her parents to obtain an abortion if a judge finds her to be sufficiently mature. We examined the factors used by juvenile court judges in judicial bypass. Nine Ohio juvenile court judges indicated the likelihood of granting judicial bypass for 48 fictitious adolescents based on six factors relevant to each minor's maturity. Individual policies were calculated according to…

  • How Useful is Evolutionary Psychology for Understanding Contemporary Human Sexual Behavior

Elizabeth Rice Allgeier, Michael W Wiederman•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sex Research•1994•Cited by: 3•References: 26

My own view of the optimal outcome [of investigation and writing from an evolutionary perspective] would be for the significance of evolution to become so widely known and so thoroughly embedded in the understanding of those working in the human-oriented disciplines, that its tenets can be employed, without fanfare, when they are useful, and ignored or discarded when they are not

  • Abortion: Reward for conscientious contraceptive use

Elizabeth Rice Allgeier, A R Allgeier et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1979

Debate regarding the morality of abortion has ranged from expressions of concern for the fetus by anti‐abortionists to assertions by those favoring legalized abortion that women should control their own bodies. The present research explored the possibility that the social acceptability of the sexual relationship and the extent of contraceptive conscientiousness of an abortion applicant influences favorability of response toward abortion. After re…
