  • Rhotic representation: Problems and Proposals

    Open Access•M Stanley Whitley•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2003•Cited by: 1

Starting with an r that was already ambiguous, the IPA added new symbols and diacritics without arriving at a comprehensive treatment of rhotics. The results have been ad hoc solutions and potential confusion for languages such as Spanish, in which these need to be distinguished. A few modifications of the IPA diacritic system would suffice in order to capture the different types

  • Gustar and Other Psych Verbs: A Problem in Transitivity

    M Stanley Whitley•ARTICLE•Hispania•1995•Cited by: 1

  • Communicative Language Teaching: An Incomplete Revolution

    Open Access•M Stanley Whitley•ARTICLE•Foreign Language Annals•1993•Cited by: 5•References: 55

Communicative language teaching has been hailed as a revolution, and it has achieved a solid base of widely accepted principles setting it apart from previous paradigms. Yet its transmission from scholars to teachers has been hampered by unnecessary debate and confusion. This paper explores the reasons why the channels of diffusion in the field have been unsuccessful, and suggests that further progress depends on overcoming disunity and translati…

  • Hopefully: A Shibboleth in the English Adverb System

    M Stanley Whitley•ARTICLE•American Speech•1983•References: 3

N MANY REALMS OF LIFE, scientists can observe certain phenomena but not their genesis. For instance, the astronomer studies myriads of stars, gas clouds, giants, novas or supernovas, and ejected gases. But it has been difficult to capture these at the actual moment when cloud becomes star and fusion begins, or when the star begins to swell or explode. The astronomer can only work backward and hypothesize about the elusive processes that have led …

  • Person and Number in the Use of We, You, and They

    M Stanley Whitley•ARTICLE•American Speech•1978•Cited by: 5•References: 1

IN THE ENGLISH pronominal system, the traditional parameters of classification include person, humanness, gender, and number.1 Transformational grammar has translated these parameters into syntactic features and deployed them in a classificatory matrix so as to define distinct pronominal pidgeonholes. Paul Postal (1970), for instance, analyzes the system of English personal pronouns as follows.2 person human female plural
