  • Evidence in support of a model that predicts how biological and environmental factors interact to influence spatial skills

    M Beth Casey, Ronald L Nuttall et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1999•Cited by: 12•References: 3

It was proposed, based on M. Annett (1985), that individuals biologically predisposed to poorer spatial skills are less likely to capitalize on opportunities to develop these skills. Using an analysis of variance design assessing mental rotation skills in 2 cohorts of 8th graders (365 students), the authors found a significant 3-way interaction (Brothers x Family Handedness x Gender). For the girls with brothers, those from all right-handed famil…

  • The Effect of Writing Chinese Characters on Success on the Water-Level Task

    Open Access•Chieh Li, Ronald L Nuttall et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 21

This study examined why Chinese undergraduates performed better on an eight-item water-level task (WLT) than did American undergraduates. Based on cognitive developmental theory, it was hypothesized that ability to write Chinese characters may facilitate performance on the WLT. This hypothesis was tested along with an additional hypothesis that extensive training in mathematics, especially geometry, facilitates WLT performance. The participants w…

Donileen R Loseke, Matthew Colton et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1998

  • Mediators of gender differences in mathematics college entrance test scores: A comparison of spatial skills with internalized beliefs and anxieties

  • The influence of spatial ability on gender differences in mathematics college entrance test scores across diverse samples

    M Beth Casey, Ronald L Nuttall et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1995•Cited by: 33•References: 3

The relationship between mental rotation ability and gender differences in Scholastic Aptitude Test-Math (SAT-M) across diverse samples was investigated. Talented preadolescents, college students, and high- and low-ability college-bound youths, totaling 760, were administered the Vandenberg Mental Rotation Test. Gender comparisons showed male outperforming female students in both mental rotation and SAT-M for all 3 high-ability groups but not for…

  • Effects of gender, age, and history of abuse on social workers' judgments of sexual abuse allegations

    Helene Jackson, Ronald L Nuttall et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work Research•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 1

As part of a national study, 172 social workers were surveyed to determine the prevalence of a history of childhood abuse and the extent to which specific background and personal characteristics affect clinical judgments about sexual abuse. Twenty-one percent of the women and 22 percent of the men reported personal histories of sexual abuse. Eight percent of both genders reported having been physically abused, and a strong association between phy…

  • The Effects of Family Size, Birth Order, Sibling Separation and Crowding on the Academic Achievement of Boys and Girls

Ena Vazquez Nuttall, Ronald L Nuttall et al.•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•1976•Cited by: 4•References: 7

Family constellation variables such as family size, birth order, spacing of children, and crowding were related to academic achievement when IQ was controlled. The sample consisted of 306 girls and 247 boys from large and small families living in four suburban Boston communities. It was found after controlling for IQ that small family boys tended to have better grades than did large family boys. First born girls had higher academic achievement th…

  • A Causal Model Analysis of Bloom’s Taxonomy

    Open Access•George F Madaus, Elinor M Woods et al.•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•1973•Cited by: 5•References: 1

The causal model approach used in this study tested the cumulative hierarchical structure of the six major taxonomic levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy by measuring the strengths of the linear relationships (“links”) between levels. The assumed hierarchy should have direct links between adjacent levels and should have no indirect links between nonadjacent levels. The magnitude of these direct and indirect links was measured by constructing a causal model…
