  • Pushing the Limits

    J Edward Schofield, Danni M Pearce et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This paper presents two high-resolution pollen records dating to ∼AD 1000–1400 that reveal the impacts of Norse colonists on vegetation and landscape around a remote farmstead in the Western Settlement of Greenland. The study is centred upon a ‘centralised farm’ (ruin group V53d) in Austmannadalen, near the margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet (64°13′N, 49°49′W). The climate is low arctic and considered marginal in terms of its suitability for the t…

  • The glacial geomorphology of upper Godthåbsfjord (Nuup Kangerlua) in southwest Greenland

Open Access•Danni M Pearce, Douglas Mair et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2018

The Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) is known to have experienced widespread retreat over the last century. Information on outlet glacier dynamics, prior to this, are limited due to both a lack of observations and a paucity of mapped or mappable deglacial evidence which restricts our understanding of centennial to millennial timescale dynamics of the GrIS. Here we present glacial geomorphological mapping, for upper Godthåbsfjord, covering 5800 km2 at a…

  • Schumpeter and Democracy and Exchange

    Open Access•Douglas Mair•ARTICLE•THEORIA An International Journal…•2010

The global economy is battling financial crisis and recession on an unprecedented scale. Reisman's book Democracy and Exchange reviews the contributions of a number of thinkers including Adam Smith and Joseph Schumpeter to the task of making ordinary people feel tolerably happy with the outcomes that affect their lives. The article argues that although Smith is viewed as the principal figure in the Scottish political economy tradition, there are …

  • Regional tax differentials

Anthony J Laramie, Anthony Laramie et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2005•Cited by: 1

Laramie A. J. and Mair D. (2005) Regional tax differentials: a Kaleckian approach, Regional Studies 39 , 345–355. The paper presents a Kaleckian approach to the analysis of the incidence and macroeconomic effects of national and local taxes. The micro‐ and macro‐economic foundations of the model are developed. These are then used to identify the effects on the UK, Scottish and rest of the UK economies if the Scottish Parliament were to exercise i…

  • Full Employment

Douglas Mair, Douglas D Mair et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Social Economy•2002•References: 14

Kalecki's 1943 essay Political Aspects of Full Employment (PAFE) is widely recognised as a seminal essay in the theory of the political business cycle. The paper argues that PAFE may also be interpreted as an early recognition by Kalecki of the phenomenon of rent seeking. Kalecki's discussion of the rent-seeking behavior of businessmen is shown to have anticipated Olson's subsequent theory of distributional coalitions. A Kalecki-Olson analysis pr…

  • The incidence of business rates

Anthony J Laramie, Douglas Mair et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•1993•References: 7

Kalecki's writings on fiscal policy have never received adequate attention although he was early to recognize the interdependence between tax changes, the distribution of income and macroeconomic aggregates. This article takes as its foundation Kalecki's theory of income distribution and modifies it by introducing the level of taxation. By introducing Weintraub's consumption coefficient the effect of the structure of taxation on the distribution …

  • The Incidence of Business Rates on Manufacturing Industry in Scotland and the Rest of the Uk

    Open Access•Douglas Mair, Douglas D Mair et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•1992•References: 1

Separate Scottish and the rest of U.K. systems of local business property taxation remain the only British example of regional fiscal autonomy. Scottish local business property taxes are L400m. per annum higher than if parity of treatment existed. A Kaleckian tax incidence model is used to identify the macroeconomic effects of the tax differential under varying assumptions about the treatment of the tax as a direct or overhead cost, with and with…

  • John Rae

    Open Access•Douglas Mair, Douglas D Mair•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•1990•Cited by: 5•References: 3

Contemporary economics is regarded as being in a state of crisis. Many of the new directions in economics are fully consistent with the Scottish political economy tradition. An under-appreciated name in the Scottish tradition is John Rae (1796-1872). As well as making important contributions to the theories of capital and interest, Rae had an important influence on Thorstein Veblen and American institutionalist thought. Joseph Schumpeter was also…

  • Urban Unemployment; A Causal Modelling Approach

    Open Access•Douglas Mair, Douglas D Mair et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1989•References: 6

Intra-urban variations in male unemployment are hypothesised to depend on residential variations in the personal characteristics of adult males, (age, marital status, family size, skill level, housing tenure), and local characteristics, (manufacturing employment, the number of married working women, and unemployment in previous years). A causal modelling approach is adopted, in which the nature and direction of the causal relationships between th…
