Interdependent Infrastructure as Linked Social, Ecological, and Technological Systems (Setss) to Address Lock‐in and Enhance Resilience
Traditional infrastructure adaptation to extreme weather events (and now climate change) has typically been techno‐centric and heavily grounded in robustness—the capacity to prevent or minimize disruptions via a risk‐based approach that emphasizes control, armoring, and strengthening (e.g., raising the height of levees). However, climate and nonclimate challenges facing infrastructure are not purely technological. Ecological and social systems al…

Adapting the social-ecological system framework for urban stormwater management

The Lonely City
In a world of over 7 billion people, over half live in cities. The city is its own ecology—a container holding individuals together and providing them with chance, opportunity, needed work. But the city can also be lived as an enclosure—a series of enclosures. I moved into a room in Brixton and stared out my window at the apartments across the street for weeks. My voyeuristic gaze made me think about (dis)connections. About interiority and exteri…
Brownfields and Environmental Justice
Brownfields are parcels of chemically contaminated land that are not redeveloped due to the expense of cleanup. Correcting any environmental injustice associated with brownfields can involve redevelopment efforts that account for economic disparities. Here we show that economic conditions in communities with brownfields that have received funding from the United States government are significantly worse than in the nation as a whole. These result…
Public perceptions of energy consumption and savings
In a national online survey, 505 participants reported their perceptions of energy consumption and savings for a variety of household, transportation, and recycling activities. When asked for the most effective strategy they could implement to conserve energy, most participants mentioned curtailment (e.g., turning off lights, driving less) rather than efficiency improvements (e.g., installing more efficient light bulbs and appliances), in contras…

An international comparative analysis of sustainability transformation across seven universities
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the key aspects of transformation of universities towards sustainability, such as the ideal characteristics of the “sustainable university”, and the drivers and barriers in the transformation, by comparing the strategies of seven universities world‐wide. Design/methodology/approach A systems transformation analysis of seven case studies has been applied through a self‐evaluation based on the tridim…
