A toolbox for studying health inequalities
The Labor of Distinction
Elites appropriate labor that produces and reproduces distinct lifestyles. This article shows how the practice of this type of labor-what we term the "labor of distinction"-consists of four core dimensions: (1) curatorship, in the management of employers' class symbols; (2) menialism, in freeing employers from "vulgar" practices; (3) Veblenian embodiment, in signaling employers' status through bodily display; and (4) non-personship, in procuring …
Carnal concepts in action
Written in the form of a dialogue with Brussels sociologist Dieter Vandebroeck, this article retraces the social and intellectual trajectory of Loïc Wacquant as stepping stone to reviewing and discussing the major concepts coined and theoretical propositions elaborated in the course of his research on comparative urban marginality, racial domination, the ghetto, the penal state, neoliberalism, and carnality. Les études épidémiologiques montrent en effet que l’obésité affecte de façon disproportion…

This article presents an in-depth interview with John Levi Martin (University of Chicago) concerning his book The Explanation of Social Action. It aims to situate the book within Martin's more overarching research interests, elucidate its linkages to earlier work, elaborate on central concepts (‘third-person causality’, ‘social aesthetics’, ‘social objects’, etc.) and address some common misunderstandings. In addition, Martin positions his own ap…
The Frenzy of Fields
In their ongoing attempts to define the basic architecture of the social world, sociologists have repeatedly turned to the idea of an ‘intermediate’ concept of social structure. Led by the intuition that something is needed to bridge the gap between the ‘macro-level’ of society as a whole and the ‘micro-level’ of individual practice, several authors have attempted to formulate the notion of a ‘meso-level’ social order. While embedded in the gener…
