  • An interdisciplinary, co-designed guide for return to running postpartum—a mixed-methods study

Open Access•Megan L James, Diane Crone et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026•References: 2

Introduction Despite its ease of access and multifaceted health benefits, compared to pre-pregnancy, engagement in running decreases following childbirth (postpartum). While a biopsychosocial approach is recommended to help women return to running postpartum, greater understanding of running-specific barriers and facilitators is needed to support this. To date, there is a lack of evidence-based, co-designed guidance to help facilitate re-engageme…

  • Pelvic compression garments alter running biomechanics, perceived support, and fear of symptoms in postpartum women with pelvic floor dysfunction

Open Access•G Donnelly, Gráinne M Donnelly et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026

Wearing a pelvic compression garment appears to alter running biomechanics in postpartum women with PFD in a way that produces a smoother running gait and restricts transverse pelvis motion, promoting trunk-pelvis coordination similar to that of healthy runners. In addition, wearing a pelvic compression garment increases perceived core and pelvic floor support and decreases fear of experiencing PFD symptoms compared to a control condition. Levato…

  • A Global Women’s Rugby Union Web-Based Survey

Open Access•Natalie Brown, Genevieve Williams et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Rugby Union (rugby) is a full-contact team sport characterised by frequent collision events. Over one third (2.7 million) of global rugby participants are women and girls. Yet, most rugby research, laws, and regulations are derived from the men's game with limited transferability to the women's game. This includes research focused on injury and concussion management. Greater insights are urgently required to enable appropriate adaptations and sup…

  • Humans Optimize Ground Contact Time and Leg Stiffness to Minimize the Metabolic Cost of Running

    Open Access•Isabel S Moore, Kelly J Ashford et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 48

Trained endurance runners appear to fine-tune running mechanics to minimise metabolic cost. Referred to as self-optimisation, the support for this concept has primarily been collated from only a few gait (e.g. stride frequency, length) and physiological (e.g., oxygen consumption, heart rate) characteristics. To extend our understanding, the aim of this study was to examine the effect of manipulating ground contact time on the metabolic cost of ru…

  • The Beast Within

    Open Access•Isabel S Moore•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 22

This autoethnography documents the author's lived experience while in the midst of an acute flare-up of ulcerative colitis (UC). Through depicting such a flare-up the depths of despair, anger, and frustration are relived. The disruption caused by the chronic illness upon daily functioning leads the author to reflect upon the influence of illness on an athletic body within a sporting subculture. Questions are raised regarding the "validity" of hav…
