The Past, Present and Future of the Study of Collecting
To mark thirty-five complete volumes of the journal and the retirement of the journal’s founding editor, Arthur MacGregor, the journal’s editorial team and UCL’s Centre for Early Modern Studies brought together a panel of experts, most of whom have not been involved with the journal before, to give their thoughts on the past, present and potential future of the field. Here, we capture the essence of the discussion through short contributions writ…
Strengthening Reflexivity Through Trauma- and Violence-Informed Practice in Action Research
Reflexivity is an integral part of action research and is recognized as an important and necessary indicator of study rigour. A key goal of reflexivity is to ensure that research decisions do not replicate existing (or add new) harm to those whom the research describes or involves, however less attention has been paid to potential harms that researchers themselves may face. This paper brings attention to the vulnerabilities of researchers with li…
Tell el-Amarna, 2022
Fieldwork at Amarna in 2022 included excavation at the Great Aten Temple and the North Desert Cemetery, and the continuation of several post-excavation projects. Those post-excavation projects reported on here are the study of skeletal materials, pottery, plant and organic remains, and inscriptions from the North Desert Cemetery; pottery, plant and other organic remains from the North Cliffs Cemetery; and digital modelling of the North Desert Cem…
Social Isolation in Community-Dwelling Older Adults During Covid-19
The COVID-19 pandemic increased social isolation for many older adults, causing concern for their health and well-being. To enhance understanding of how community-dwelling older adults were impacted by prolonged social isolation during COVID-19, a qualitative descriptive study was conducted to: (1) explore the self-reported factors supporting their resilience during COVID-19 related social isolation, and (2) to help understand the intentional and…
Tell el-Amarna, Autumn 2018 to Autumn 2019
Fieldwork at Amarna from autumn 2018 through autumn 2019 included excavation at a previously uninvestigated cemetery, the North Desert Cemetery, located approximately 600 metres south-west of the North Tombs. Several post excavation projects also continued. Those reported on here comprise the study of skeletal materials from the North Cliffs Cemetery, hair and textiles from the North Cliffs and North Desert Cemeteries, and pottery from the North …
Sudan and the Petrie Museum
Of the 80,600 objects in UCL’s Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, around 4000 are from Sudan.1 Flinders Petrie himself did not travel south of Aswan, and these items were acquired through different channels after his death. While many of these are on display in the Museum galleries—albeit tucked amongst the greater proportion of archaeological material from Egypt—much of the Sudanese collection remains in storage due to historic limitations o…
Thinking relationally about built environments and walkability
Mycenaean pottery from Amara West (Nubia, Sudan)
Tell el-Amarna, Autumn 2017 and Spring 2018
Fieldwork at Amarna in autumn 2017 and spring 2018 included excavation at a previously uninvestigated pit-grave cemetery, the North Cliffs Cemetery, on the low desert near the North Tombs. Initial results suggest the burials here are closer in character to those at the South Tombs Cemetery (excavated 2006–13) than at the North Tombs Cemetery (excavated 2015, 2017). Several post-excavation projects continued on materials from the North and South T…
