  • Context in the Analysis of Discourse and Interaction

    Open Access•Ingrid De Saint-Georges, Ingrid De Saint‐Georges et al.•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2026

Scholars of discourse and interaction have long recognized that understanding communication requires attention to the context in which language is produced. Beyond general agreement that context matters, however, researchers often disagree about what should count as context and how many contextual elements should be considered in analysis. The way context is treated has, in fact, often distinguished different approaches and research traditions wi…

  • Superdiversity and language

Gabriele Budach, Ingrid De Saint-Georges•CHAPTER•Routledge Handbook of Migration…•2017

This chapter looks more critically at how the idea of &s;superdiversity&s; has caught up in the field of language studies, particularly sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, and what it brings, does, reveals – or obscures – in this context. The chapter examines more critically some of the conceptual, methodological, and political challenges raised by the use of term &s;superdiversity&s; for language studies and for conceptualizing the complex…

  • Please Do not Stand over the Buddha’s Head (Pay Respect)’: Mediations of Tourist and Researcher Experience in Thailand

    Open Access•Andrew Jocuns, Ingrid De Saint-Georges et al.•ARTICLE•Lingue Culture Mediazioni -…•2015•References: 5

This paper examines signs mediating tourist experience in temples and heritage sites in Thailand, paying particular attention to how language is used on signs, the semiotic make-up of the signs, and the economy of discourses embedded within those signs. Utilizing a geosemiotic approach (Scollon and Scollon 2003), we show that the signs populating tourist spaces in Thailand not only address rather different audiences, but also index distinct order…

  • Dialogues et transformations: La restitution dans les sciences du langage

    Open Access•Ingrid De Saint-Georges•ARTICLE•SociologieS•2014

Comment envisager …

  • Multilingualism and Multimodality: Current Challenges for Educational Studies

Open Access•Jean‐jacques Weber, Ingrid De Saint-Georges et al.•BOOK•Multilingualism and Multimodality•2013

In the social sciences and humanities, researchers often qualify the period in which we are living as â late-modernâ , â post-modernâ or â superdiverseâ . These terms seek to capture changing conditions and priorities brought about by a new social order. This social order is characterized, among other traits, by an increased visibility of social, cultural and linguistic diversity, arising out of unprecedented migration and mobility patterns. It i…

  • Anticipatory Discourse

Open Access•Ingrid De Saint-Georges, Ingrid De Saint‐Georges•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2012

Researchers interested in anticipatory discourse are, generally speaking, concerned with discourses in or about the future. They investigate how individuals, texts, or utterances project representations of future events, states, or relations. Unlike other areas of applied linguistics, the study of anticipatory discourse is still very much in its infancy. As yet, there is no set tradition or school for the study of such discourse, even if it has o…

  • Context in the Analysis of Discourse and Interaction

Open Access•Ingrid De Saint-Georges, Ingrid De Saint‐Georges•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2012

Context is a central concept in the analysis of discourse and interaction in all the major research traditions in applied and sociolinguistics. Early linguistics did not display much sensitivity to it (Scollon, 1998, p. 80) and tended to study utterances in isolation and without reference to context. Today, however, there seems to be a general consensus around the idea that we understand utterances because they fit or make sense within particular…

  • Les dynamiques langagières de l'accompagnement

    Ingrid De Saint-Georges•ARTICLE•Langage et société•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 8

  • Nationality and the European union competing identities in the visual design of four European cities 1

    Ingrid De Saint-Georges, Ingrid De Saint‐Georges et al.•ARTICLE•Visual Sociology•2000•Cited by: 3•References: 5

In this study, we integrate visual and linguistic research to analyze the relationship between a city's regional, national, transnational, and European identities as the face of four cities depicts it. We explore the cultural identity of Brussels, Luxembourg, Munich, and Dortmund through the study of public signs found in these cities. We examine how the choice of language, layout, typography, accompanying images, and positioning of city signs re…
