The Revolution Consumed
This article examines the relationship between consumerism and the revolts of 1968 in France, Italy and West Germany. It reviews the ways the political and cultural revolts of the long 1960s have been understood in their relation to consumerism, examines what consumption meant in the late 1960s to protesters and analyses the idea of ‘recuperation’. The article uses the case study of advertising to demonstrate that protesters both embraced an anti…
History and Memory Between Europe and Australia
This article surveys the state of European history in Australia as measured by the 2023 conference of the Australasian Association for European History (AAEH). It places the current study of European history in the context of the crises of the contemporary world and asks how the eye of the European historian can be usefully mobilised to inform the present moment. European History in the Shadows of Crisis
This article situates the practice of history in the commemoration and experience of contemporary crises. It argues that the current preoccupation with crisis reflects a failure of historical imagination produced by short‐term thinking that increasingly also governs higher education. The concept of crisis often falls short as a tool for understanding both the past and the contemporary world. Histories and accounts that emphasise sudden crisis or …
The Other ‘68ers
In The Other ‘68ers, Anna von der Goltz analyses the ‘68 of Christian Democratic activists and how they remembered and refashioned that experience in subsequent decades. The book makes excellent use of over two dozen oral history interviews in addition to extensive archival research and tells a multifaceted story—of Christian Democratic engagement with and resistance to ‘68, of Centre-Right activists’ mimicry and envy of left-wing activism, and o…
Student Revolt in 1968
Student Revolt in 1968 examines the origins, course and dissolution of student protest at three universities in the 1960s - the Freie Universität Berlin in West Germany, the campus of Nanterre in France, and the Faculty of Sociology at Trento in Italy. It traces how student revolts over space, speech, sociology and cultural democratisation catalysed a dynamic protest movement within universities in the mid-1960s that expanded dramatically beyond …

The Paperback Revolution
This article explores the relation between the “paperback revolution” of the early 1960s and the revolutions of 1968. The arrival of a mass market in books threatened to overturn the cultural order and transform reading and knowledge. Paperbacks were seen as the symbol and motor of the democratization and consumerization of knowledge. The movements of 1968 adopted a critical and democratic attitude towards “high culture” promoted by the paperback…
