  • Kongespeilet og lovrevisjonene på 1200-tallet

    Open Access•Sverre Bagge•ARTICLE•Historisk tidsskrift•2023

  • Iconoclasm – A Road to Modernization

    Open Access•Sverre Bagge, Sverre Håkon Bagge•ARTICLE•European Review•2022

My point of departure is a conflict over images in the churches in Bergen, Norway in the 1560s, around 30 years after the Reformation. This introduced a brief period of iconoclasm in Denmark–Norway, inspired by Reformed theology. Soon, however, mainstream Lutheranism took over and statues and pictures were reintroduced. The different views on images in the two Protestant confessions – Lutheranism and Calvinism – are, of course, well known, as are…

  • Håkon og Skule 1217–1240

    Open Access•Sverre Bagge•ARTICLE•Historisk tidsskrift•2020

  • Anne A. Latowsky, Emperor of the World

  • History, Archaeology and Cultural Comparison

    Open Access•Sverre Bagge, Sverre Håkon Bagge•ARTICLE•European Review•2020•References: 1

Ian Morris’s Why the West Rules – for Now (2010) is a brilliant book, dealing with Eurasian history from the first civilisations to the present. It takes an intermediate position in the famous debate about Europe and the rest of the world and European dominance during the last few centuries. Morris uses all kinds of sources. However, his general approach is staunchly materialistic: the motors of history are fear, sloth and greed. Cultural differe…

  • Social and Geographic Mobility in Medieval Norway

    Open Access•Sverre Bagge, Sverre Håkon Bagge•ARTICLE•European Review•2020

The kings’ travel patterns in thirteenth-century Norway raise the question of the relationship between geographic and social mobility. A clearer social hierarchy would reduce the king’s need for travelling and the introduction of permanent and professional administrators would mean that these people would visit the king rather than vice versa. Moreover, the king did not travel exclusively for political reasons, but also for hunting and other ente…

  • State Formation in Europe, 843–1789

Sverre Bagge, Sverre Håkon Bagge•BOOK•State Formation in Europe, 843-1789•2019

State Formation in Europe, 843–1789 follows the formation and development of the European state from the division of the Carolingian Empire to the French Revolution. The book's primary focus is on Europe's patterns of internal and external development in comparison to political organization in other parts of the world. By analysing Europe as a single unit, rather than dividing it into nation states, it reveals the broader historical connections w…

She was facing an oral examination at school and fearing questions about the “society of kindred,” which formed part of her curriculum, because she knew it was a notion that her father had rejected. Most chapters are written by established experts in their fields, who have published critical editions of the discussed narratives, their English translations, or analytical works dealing with …

  • Feudalism

Sverre Bagge, Michael H Gelting et al.•BOOK•Feudalism•2011

"This up-to-date discussion takes as its starting point the challenge to the traditional notion of feudalism in the twenty-five years since the publication of Jean-Pierre Poly and Eric Bournazel's work on the 'mutation féodale' and Susan Reynolds's attack on the very idea of a feudal society in the Middle Ages. While these challenges have presented a new picture of Western Europe in the so-called feudal age, one more focused than the traditional …

This 2007 text is a comparative, analysis of one of the most fundamental stages in the formation of Europe. Leading scholars explore the role of the spread of Christianity and the formation of new principalities in the birth of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Bohemia, Hungary, Poland and Rus' around the year 1000. Drawing on history, archaeology and art history, and emphasizing problems related to the sources and historiographical debates, they demonstr…

  • Aims and Means in the Inter‐nordic Conflicts 1302–1319

    Sverre Bagge•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of History•2007•References: 2

The paper deals with the conflicts from 1302–1319 between King Birger of Sweden and his two younger brothers, the Dukes Erik and Valdemar, which also involved the kings of the two other Nordic countries, King Erik Menved of Denmark on the side of his brother‐in‐law, King Birger, and King Håkon V of Norway, mostly in alliance with the Swedish dukes. It attempts to trace the main aims of the participants, which turn out to be consistent as well as …

  • Christianization and State Formation in Early Medieval Norway

    Sverre Bagge•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of History•2005•Cited by: 2

The article deals with problems and directions of research in the study of the Christianization of Norway. While scholars from the 19th century onwards largely accepted the sagas' account of the Christianization as the work of two missionary kings in the late tenth and early 11th century, the recent trend has been in the direction of a long and gradual process of Christianization, starting in the late ninth or early tenth century. • The Transformation of Europe

    Sverre Bagge•CHAPTER•Eurasian Transformations, Tenth…•2004

The article examines Scandinavia’s role in the transformation of Europe in the Middle Ages. First, an important aspect of this transformation is the great expansion of Western Christendom from the tenth century onwards, which led to the establishment of new political entities rather than to an extension of polities in the “old” Europe. Thus, the expansion meant an important step in the direction of a characteristic European feature, a system of i…

  • Ideologies and mentalities

    Open Access•Sverre Bagge•CHAPTER•The Cambridge history of…•2003

This chapter explains the treatment of mentality with respect to the monarchy and the church that were built up in Scandinavia in the high Middle Ages. In this way, it becomes possible to treat mentality in close connection with ideology. A main theme in most surveys of the Scandinavian countries until around 1300 is the growth of the state. The mental aspect of this development is illustrated clearly in The King's Mirror. The conflict between th…

  • Ideas and narrative in Otto of Freising's Gesta Frederici

    Sverre Bagge•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•1996•Cited by: 3•References: 3

This article discusses the inner coherence of Otto of Freising's Gesta Frederici and, by implication, the wider question of the ‘mode of perception’ in medieval historiography. Is there any connection between the philosophical and theological reflections expressed in digressions and explicit statements, and the apparently scattered and disconnected entries in his narrative? The answer to this question is positive. Gesta Frederici is carefully com…

This article discusses Abelard's Historia Calamitatum in connection with the debate on ‘the individual’ or ‘individualism’ in the Middle Ages, which has been going on between adherents of ‘the Renaissance of the Twelfth Century’ and scholars placing the emergence of the modern individual in more recent periods. The conclusion largely supports the latter point of view. Abelard does not tell a continuous story of his life, he does not describe a co…

  • Society and Politics in Snorri Sturluson’s Heimskringla

Sverre Bagge•BOOK•Society and Politics in Snorri…•1991

Heimskringla is the best known and most important book of Old Norse kings' sagas. A medieval masterpiece, the collection was written by Snorri Sturluson in the first half of the thirteenth century. The sagas have been studied primarily as literary sources and chronicles of specific historical events, but Sverre Bagge, a noted historian, finds in Heimskringla something more: a brimming guidebook to the culture and of Icelandic society. What kind o…
