D facial reconstruction and 3D printing of women skull from Bronze age, Slovakia
Porotic hyperostosis and cribra orbitalia in samples from the Late Hillfort Period sites at Dětkovice - Za zahradama (district Prostějov) and Vídeňská street (district Brno), Czech Republic
centuries AD. A total of 605 subjects were assessed for age, sex, and the above-stated pathologies using standard methods. The influence of age and sex on the occurrence of these pathologies was examined statistically. Results indicated that at the site of Dětkovice - Za zahradama, porotic hyperostosis, and cribra orbitalia do not depend on sex or age. However, at Vídeňská Street in Brno, these pathologies do not depend on sex, but they depend on…
Cytogenetic Analysis of Selected Genetically Determined Diseases in Eastern Slovakia
This work presents the results of cytogenetic analysis performed during the period 1990-2021. The work focuses on cytogenetic analysis of selected diseases that represent a serious medical and social problem in the Prešov region of eastern Slovakia. The analysis also included the determination of cytogenetic and molecular-genetic marker frequency related to selected clinical genetic diseases in a specified population of Roma ethnicity. Chromosome…
Anthropological analysis of skeletal remains from the site Vyšná Myšľa - Koscelek
century. A total of 53 individuals were examined, in whom the age at death, sex and stature were morphoscopically and metric estimated by standard anthropological methods, and the presence of non-metric traits and pathological conditions was also recorded. The analysed group consisted of 40 adults and 4 adolescents, of which 16 were women and 2 possible females, 19 men and one probable male individual, three individuals of inconclusive sex and si…
Association of Endometriosis Risk and Genetic Polymorphisms in Slovak Women
Ethnic difference frequencies of THSD7A variant, but no association with obesity
Association between vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms (Fok I, Cdx-2) and bone mineral density in Slovak postmenopausal women
polymorphisms contribute to the determination of BMD in Slovak postmenopausal women and can probably be used with other genetic markers together to identify individuals at high risk of osteoporosis.
Y-SNP analysis versus Y-Haplogroup Predictor in the Slovak population
Human Y-chromosome haplogroups are important markers used mainly in population genetic studies. The haplogroups are defined by several SNPs according to the phylogeny and international nomenclature. The alternative method to estimate the Y-chromosome haplogroups is to predict Y-chromosome haplotypes from a set of Y-STR markers using software for Y-haplogroup prediction. The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of three types of Y-hap…
Association of the FTO rs9939609 polymorphism with obesity in Roma/Gypsy population
The rs9939609 SNP located in the first intron of the fat mass and obesity associated gene (FTO) has been found to be associated with common obesity mainly in populations of European descent. The Roma/Gypsy population as an ethnic minority of Asian Indian origin is well known for its adverse health status with a high prevalence of obesity. The main aim of this study was to examine the contribution of the rs9939609 FTO polymorphism to the high prev…
Comparison of Y-STR polymorphisms in three different Slovak population groups
Eleven Y-chromosomal microsatellite loci included in the Powerplex Y multiplex kit were analyzed in different Slovak population samples: Habans (n = 39), Romanies (n = 100) and Slovak Caucasian (n = 148) individuals, respectively, from different regions of Slovakia. The analysis of molecular variance between populations indicated that 89.27% of the haplotypic variations were found within populations and only 10.72% between populations (Fst = 0.10…
Historical Sketch of Slovak Haban (Hutterite) Population Based on Autosomal STR Analysis
According to the Hutterite chronicles, the Habans arrived from Austrian Tyrol, Switzerland, and northernmost Italy and stayed in four regions of Slovakia (Sobotište, Vel'ké Leváre, Moravský Svätý Ján, Trenčín). There are some communities in western Slovakia that retained their Haban cultural identity and still identify themselves as descendents of the Hutterite population with their own specific customs. Slovak Habans are typical founder populati…
The genetic structure of the Slovak population revealed by Y-chromosome polymorphisms
Historic and linguistic records indicate that Slovaks belong to the Slavic population. We performed a population genetic study on 250 unrelated Slovak males, who were typed for 12 Y-short tandem repeats (STRs) (DYS391, DYS389I, DYS439, DYS389II, DYS438, DYS437, DYS19, DYS392, DYS393, DYS390, DYS385a/b). The corresponding Y-haplogroups were deduced using Whit Athey's Haplogroup Predictor. The most common haplogroup R1a is presented by 38% of indiv…
Y-haplogroup frequencies in the Slovak Romany population
European ‘gypsies’, commonly referred to as Romanies, are represented by a large number of groups spread across many countries. We performed a population genetic study on 200 unrelated Romany males to reveal the genetic origin of the Slovak Romany population. On the basis of Y-chromosome haplotypes, we determined the corresponding Y-haplogroups using Whit Athey’s Haplogroup Predictor. The obtained distribution of haplogroups provided strong evide…
