Sineu Pinkout! Promoción turística, conflicto político y renovación festiva en la Mallorca rural
In this article, we propose to analyse the role of tourism promotion in the social and political con- flict in the rural municipality of Sineu (Mallorca) between 2013 and 2014 with respect to the celebration of the festivities in honour of their patron saint. In this sense, we emphasize that the emergent festival of La Mucada proposed by young left-wingers has meant a ritual and performative practice of de-essentialization of the tourist "otherne…

This article is concerned with tourist dwelling and mobile neighbouring in Volkswagen campervans. It takes notions of dwelling and neighbouring to the spaces that tourists inhabit away from home, extending philosophical debates on dwelling-in-mobilities to the actual temporary dwellings of tourists. A dwelling perspective focuses the attention on the binding acts of homemaking and neighbouring on the move, rather than on the bounded spaces of hom…
Trajectories of embodiment in Tourist Studies
In this article we map the 20 year trajectory of theorising embodiment in Tourist Studies. From its inception in 2001, embedded within the turn in the social sciences towards embodiment, Tourist Studies has paved the way in pushing the boundaries of theorising the links between embodiment, sensuality and performativity. Tourist Studies has opened up novel trajectories in tourism research away from the traditional focus on vision, towards multi-se…
A freegan pop-up café: Embedding critical hospitalities into the curriculum
This article suggests the importance of opening tourism and hospitality management education to critical perspectives and practices. Critical developments on hospitality have had a limited impact on higher education curricula, which retain a strong vocational orientation. This article presents a student-led pedagogical innovation that enacts hospitality as a critical tool. The activity involved the organization of a pop-up café using freegan prin…
Festive traditions and tourism in Mallorca: Ludic transgressions and the disruption of otherness
Invented traditions are worldmaking devices that mobilise places for tourism consumption. They are regularly used to project a tourist sense of otherness. However, they can also be sites of resistance and transgression in tourism. This article explores the transgressive potential of invented traditions as a locus of cultural change that challenges processes of othering in tourism. It reflects on the disruption of alterity with a case study of La …
Morocco: Restaging Colonialism for the Masses
This chapter contrasts general statements about the inhabitability of contemporary spatialities with an ethnographic account of day to day uses of the coastal hotel. It draws attention to the pressures and pleasures of sociality which inhabit the coastal hotel. The chapter focuses on the fleeting and mundane moments of hospitality, the network of performances of hosting and guesting that makes the coastal hotel livable. It examines dominant persp…
Modern mass tourism
I opened Modern Mass Tourism expecting to find hordes of tourists lying on the beach. However there was no one to be seen. There is very little in this book about the tradition of tourism commonly

Cultures of Mass Tourism: Doing the Mediterranean in the Age of Banal Mobilities
With more than 230 million international tourists a year, the Mediterranean region is the largest tourist destination in the world. Building Castles in the Sand: Repositioning Touch on the Beach
This article develops insights into the haptic geographies of sandcastles and sunbathing. The aim is to produce a livelier account of the beach that incorporates a sense of performativity and enjoyment, breaking with the occulocentrism that dominates social sciences. While acknowledging the importance of vision, this paper affirms the centrality of touch and its significance in the production of feeling. My concern is with haptic articulations of…
A haptic geography of the beach: Naked Bodies, Vision and Touch
The beach and the naked body are a casualty of the idealism that dominates social sciences. Despite the resurgence of work on embodiment, very few accounts have actually explored the centrality of the body on the beach. Drawing on ethnographic research on the island of Menorca (Spain), this article focuses on practices of nudity on the beach. Instead of giving priority to the representation and meaning of nudity, I am primarily concerned with how…
