Fragments of Our Youth in the Long 1980s
Carried out mostly through social media and email during the COVID pandemic, two longtime friends recollect and reflect in this conversation-in-progress on the memories of shared and parallel experiences of the literary and art scenes from the early 1980s to its echoes in the new century. The synergistic movements in poetry, popular culture, art, theater, dance, and independent cinema in the effervescent reform era of “opening up” inspired bold e…
Between Calligraphic Untranslatability and Symbolic Translatability
Emily Apter's conception of the "untranslatable" taps into the dynamics and difficulties of translation between languages and cultures. The process of translation is described as a "intransigent nub of meaning that triggers endless translating in response to its resistant singularity." When words are taken out of their context, the idiosyncratic meaning is obliterated and revamped. On the one hand, different from the Derridean critique of Western…
Manipulated Translation, Politicized Canon
The novel The Gadfly (1897) enjoyed enormous popularity in the Soviet Union, China, and other socialist countries in the twentieth century. The novel was first canonized in the Soviet Union, listed as an extracurricular reading for middle school students, and then canonized in China in the 1950s and early 1960s. Instead of inviting open-ended interpretations, the authorities endorse a politicized interpretation of the novel, portraying the Cathol…
Walking Out of the Mundane
The Chinese economic reform starting from the 1980s not only brought in convenience, leisure and limited freedom, but also disciplined human bodies, repressed human desires and routinized everyday life. Many Chinese artists born in the 1980s have heart-felt feelings towards the fast-changing reality and attempt to find an alternative to the mundane life locked up in the urban grid. This essay examines the performances of walking conducted by a gr…
The relationship between social participation and depressive symptoms among Chinese middle-aged and older adults
Objectives: This study examined the mutual effects of social participation and depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older Chinese adults from offline and online perspectives. Reciprocal relationships between depressive symptoms and the four subtypes of offline participation were also examined. Methods: Based on China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study data (CHARLS), this study conducted ID matching for three waves of data from 2013, 2015,…
Life in-between Screens
This conversation, originally conducted in Chinese, explores the role of films, movie theaters, screens, streaming platforms, and documentary filmmaking in China during the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Zhang Zhen and Jiang Jiehong—professors at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, and Birmingham City University, UK, respectively—discuss the human rights movement prompted by state-sanctioned racist violence, feminist interventi…
Staging the intimate-public camera
This article highlights pioneering dancer, choreographer, and multi-media artist Wen Hui's unique contribution to Chinese independent cinema and first person documentary by analyzing her two films made with her ‘forgotten’ third grandmother. The close reading is grounded in her explorations in intermedia performance and documentary theater centered on body as archive of memory and women's experience. I argue that Listening to Third Grandmother an…
Brain dynamics of decision-making in the generalized trust game
DV-Made China
In 1990s post-Reform China, a growing number of people armed with video cameras poured out upon the Chinese landscape to both observe and contribute to the social changes then underway. Happening upon the crucial platform of an older independent film movement, this digital turn has given us a "DV China" that includes film and media communities across different social strata and disenfranchised groups, including ethnic and religious minorities and…

DV-Made China
Dream-walking in digital wasteland
In the past two decades, an alternative film practice in China has actively engaged with digital media, yielding a robust body of DV works, fiction and non-fiction alike. In this article, I trace an evolving trend which uses a black and white ‘digital palette’, visible particularly in independent documentary, and I analyse its aesthetic and socio-political implications. Focusing on Huang Wenhai's Meng you/Dream Walking (2005) and Huang Weikai's X…

Cause-of-Death Contributions to Educational Inequalities in Mortality in Austria between 1981/1982 and 1991/1992
This article uses census records and deaths records to analyze trends in educational inequalities in mortality for Austrian women and men aged 35-64 years between 1981/1982 and 1991/1992. We find an increasing gradient in mortality by education for circulatory diseases and especially ischaemic heart disease. Respiratory diseases and, in addition for women, cancers showed the opposite trend. Using decomposition analysis, we give evidence that in m…
