    Open Access•Jennifer L Meanwell, E H Paris et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2025•References: 56

Greenstone is commonly used to produce culturally significant items across Mesoamerica, including axes, earspools, figurines, and beads. This research characterizes the mineralogy of greenstone materials recovered from sites in the Jovel Valley, Chiapas, Mexico, to document the range of green minerals utilized by the inhabitants. Our analysis of the objects suggests that the Late Classic and Early Postclassic Maya of the Jovel Valley had access t…

  • Applications of Micro-CT Imaging in Age-At-Death Estimates of Maya Dogs

    Open Access•Miranda George, E H Paris et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2024•References: 13

While there are many techniques for estimating age-at-death in archaeological dogs, the pulp cavity/tooth width ratio is considered one of the most accurate methods. This study adapts this technique for application to MicroCT imaging, a non-destructive methodology that is rapidly gaining ground in faunal analysis. Mandibular first molar and upper and lower canine teeth recovered from two Late Classic-Early Postclassic period sites in the Maya hig…

  • En el corazón de la antigua Chiapan: Elementos para el estudio del paisaje Postclásico de la Depresión Central de Chiapas

Open Access•Roberto López Bravo, Juan Ignacio Macías Quintero•ARTICLE•Revista Pueblos y fronteras digital•2021

The Late Classic and Early Postclassic civic centers of Moxviquil and Cerro Ecatepec/CV-38, located in the Jovel Valley of highland Chiapas, supported a number of institutions that provide evidence for a low level of commercialization. This article presents the excavation results of a funerary cave at the site of Moxviquil, located in the Jovel Valley of central highland Chiapas, Mexico. Diagnostic ceramics from funerary offerings suggest that the use of the cave spanned the principal occupation at the site, including Late Classic (a.d. 600–900) and Early Postclassic (a.d. 900–1250) periods. The offerings situate the Moxviquil cave within an extensive tradition of Mesoamerican …
