Who Intervenes and When? Individual and Situational Correlates of Bystander Behavior When Sexual Images Are Shared Nonconsensually
Although a popular approach for sexual violence prevention, limited research has explored the role of bystander intervention in the nonconsensual distribution of sexual images (NCD). Among 1,095 undergraduate students, online survey results indicated that although 76% had the opportunity to intervene, only 33% intervened prosocially; the most common prosocial intervention was confronting the perpetrator (28.2% of bystanders). Individual (e.g., by…
Too Soon / Too Late: A Pretext for a Recurrence of Bernard Stiegler
A slightly modified transcript of the Bernard Stiegler Memorial Lecture given on August 5, 2023, at the invitation of Yuk Hui and the Research Network for Philosophy and Technology, Hong Kong. From a reflection on Engels reflecting on the too-soonness and too-lateness of the French Commune government, via a film by Huillet and Straub to which these words of Engels gave birth, the author begins to reflect on Stiegler’s memorial text for Jacques De…

Orienting Care: Boris Groys, Philosophy Of Care
In Philosophy of Care, Boris Groys undertakes a reading of key philosophical texts in terms of the relationship between self-care and care, as a way of trying to reinvigorate the question of health beyond its current instantiation in biopolitical life and algorithmic life. He passes through Socrates, Hegel, Nietzsche, Kojève, Bataille, Heidegger and others, culminating in Bogdanov's distinction between egressive and degressive organization and hi…

The Pharmacology of the Gift: On Stiegler's Call for a New Theoretical Computer Science
Bernard Stiegler's theoretical and practical Internation Project called for a refoundation of theoretical computer science that would also put the fact of exchange back at the centre of the conceptualization and organization of the economy. This can be interpreted as a call to critique a form of capitalism that has arisen over the past 70 years through an ideology via which 'information' conjoins computation and economics into what becomes an abs…
Care and Carelessness in the Anthropocene
This article proposes dividing Bernard Stiegler's work into three phases, and that a notion of care develops and deepens as these phases progress. To each of these phases there corresponds a particular relationship to Heidegger's thought: 1) the Heidegger of Being and Time who denies the role of technics in the opening of the possibility of authentic time; 2) as a thinker of the “they” who corrects Simondon's inability to think collective disindi…
Technics, Time and the Internation: Bernard Stiegler's Thought - A Dialogue with Daniel Ross
This interview with Bernard Stiegler's long-time translator and collaborator, Daniel Ross, examines the connections between different periods of Stiegler's work, thought, writing and activism. Moving from the three volumes of Technics and Time to the final large-scale collaborative project of The Internation, the discussion concentrates on Stiegler's conceptualization of 'protentionality', hope and care for a world confronted by climate crises, e…
Toward an Exergue on the Future of Différance
In Of Grammatology, Derrida discusses Leroi-Gourhan in relating différance to memory, the ‘program’, and the history of life. In Technics and Time, 1, Stiegler argues that Derrida failed to draw all the philosophical implications of linking différance to the questions of life and retention. Derrida returned to the life sciences in 1975, in a seminar not published in its entirety until 2019. There, Derrida attempts to deconstruct the geneticist Fr…
The Black Angel of History: Afrofuturism’s Cosmic Techniques
Against the usual interpretation, which states that Afrofuturism is unreservedly technophilic, I argue that Afrofuturism is a radical critique of white technology. White technology (be it imperial, colonial or capitalist) is an acosmic technology that rejects its belonging to the cosmos. The Space Age and what is now called New Space (both of which have neo-colonial aims) are perfect illustrations of white technology and its anthropocentric enthu…
Noodiversity, Technodiversity: Elements of a New Economic Foundation Based on a New Foundation for Theoretical Computer Science
Today’s question concerning technology involves asking about both the post-pandemic world and the post-data-economy world, in a situation where resentments and scapegoats are easily generated. We can no longer avoid integrating this question with that of entropy, but also with the specific question of anthropic entropy, and the way this has accompanied the rise of computation: it thus demands a new approach to theoretical computer science. While …

Small corpora and low-frequency phenomena: Try and beyond contemporary, standard English
Small corpora remain an important resource for addressing questions requiring specialized data not found in large general purpose corpora. But do these small corpora have sufficient data to analyze low-frequency phenomena? This article presents a case study of the try-and-V pseudocoordination construction in English, which has an unusual morphosyntactic restriction: neither verb can be inflected. Diachronic corpora elucidate its origin as reanaly…
We Have to Become the Quasi-cause of Nothing - of Nihil: An Interview with Bernard Stiegler
This interview with the philosopher Bernard Stiegler was conducted in Paris on 28 January 2015, and first appeared in Dutch translation in the journal De uil van Minerva. The conversation begins by discussing the fundamental place occupied by the concept of 'technics' in Stiegler's work, and how the 'constitutivity' of technics does and does not relate to Kant and Husserl. Stiegler is then asked about his relationship with Deleuze, and he respond…
Black Country, White Wilderness: Conservation, Colonialism, and Conflict in Tasmania
In 2015, Tasmania’s land management plan for the expansive Wilderness World Heritage Area, covering around a fifth of the entire island of south and central Tasmania, was dramatically revised. The new plan expanded dual management of the area with Aboriginal Tasmanians and the Tasmanian state through the creation of an Aboriginal Cultural Business Unit that would generate financial management opportunities for Aboriginals. However, Aboriginal per…
The New Conflict of the Faculties and Functions
The concept of entropy has been applied to life and, in Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen’s bioeconomics of exosomatization, to human life. These accounts of “negentropy” must be reinterpreted in the age of the data economy, however, from a perspective that starts from the technological or exosomatic condition of all knowledge. This can be opened up from a reconsideration of Kant’s account of intuition, understanding, and reason that must also be a criti…
Totally, Tenderly, Tragically: BS and BB
Bernard Stiegler's account of aesthetics is rooted in André Leroi-Gourhan's concept of exteriorization, Gilbert Simondon's concept of individuation, and Edmund Husserl's concepts of retention and protention. Cinema takes up a singular place in this account, both in terms of its resemblance to the structure of consciousness itself, and in terms of its location at the intersection of the technical and the oneiric. Jean-Luc Godard's Contempt is a fi…

The Place of Free and Open Source Software in the Social Apparatus of Accumulation
The immateriality of both commodities and labor, which is increasingly characteristic of contemporary capitalism at its hi-tech centers, has complicated drawing a hard distinction between productive and unproductive forms of labor. Drawing an overly technical distinction between these two categories of labor potentially overlooks some important aspects of the processes of capitalist reproduction, particularly the increasingly social character of …

Doing and Saying Stupid Things in the Twentieth Century: Bêtise and Animality in Deleuze and Derrida
If performativity means that to say stupid things is to do stupid things, then today stupidity is a very large problem, both within and outside philosophy, stemming, according to Adorno and Horkheimer, from a prostitution of the Aufklärung. But understanding stupidity seems almost to require becoming stupid oneself, as evidenced by Derrida's misunderstanding of Deleuze on just this topic, the former failing to grasp that the latter's account is f…

Translator's Introduction To Bernard Stiegler's 'Pharmacology Of Desire: Drive-based Capitalism And Libidinal Dis-economy
There is a long history of trying to marry psychoanalytic theory with economic theory, consisting in all those philosophical attempts throughout the twentieth century to unify the work of Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud. This history is not without resemblance to the attempt in physics to unify the standard model of the strong, weak, and electromagnetic forces (described by quantum chromodynamics) with gravitational force (described by general relati…
