  • Wake up: The urgent appeal of Allan Pred

Lisa Hoffman, Janet Franklin et al.•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•2023•References: 6

We are living in what geographer Allan Pred called an “extended moment of danger.” Accelerations of capitalist modernity have for decades yielded new sensibilities and situations that have given way to crises of democracy across the globe. While the sentiment that we are living in precarious time has been expressed by many over the years, we believe it to be extraordinarily apt today, and that Allan Pred's later work offers a set of illuminations…

  • Being Italian: The peculiar journey of blackness

    Heather Merrill•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Generations of African and Black Italians are extending the boundaries of what it means to be Italian, in the face of denial, diversion, and an insistence on whiteness as the measure of inclusion, and humanity. Drawing on Allan Pred’s work on racist geographies of the everyday and taken-for-granted in Sweden, I advance the concepts of B/black spaces and relational places to approach to the study of identity, belonging, and place in Black Europe, …

  • Black Spaces: African Diaspora in Italy

    Heather Merrill•BOOK•Black Spaces•2018

Black Spaces examines how space and place are racialized, and the impacts on everyday experiences among African Italians, immigrants, and refugees. It explores the deeply intertwined histories of Africa and Europe, and how people of African descent negotiate, contest, and live with anti-blackness in Italy. The vast majority of people crossing the Mediterranean into Europe are from West Africa and the Horn of Africa. Their passage is part of the l…

  • Spaces of Danger: Culture and Power in the Everyday

Deborah Cowen, Derek Gregory et al.•BOOK•Spaces of Danger•2015

  • Migration and Surplus Populations: Race and Deindustrialization in Northern Italy

    Open Access•Heather Merrill•ARTICLE•Antipode•2011•Cited by: 12•References: 37

This paper examines how regional and national identities are being reshaped through the spatialization of “race” in Italy. Neoliberal globalization expands the spatial mediation of historically layered racialized anxieties. In the context of African in-migration, “black” is emerging as a prominent marker of difference. The state has largely proscribed immigration from impoverished African nations, effecting a shadow economy of undocumented worker…

  • Unraveled: A Weaver's Tale of Life Gone Modern by Elizabeth L. Krause

    Open Access•Heather Merrill•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2011

  • Bordering Humanism: Life and Death on the Margins of Europe

Donald Carter, Heather Merrill•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2007•Cited by: 7

This article addresses the increasing militarisation of the Italian borders and the establishment of detention centres reminiscent of concentration camps as a state response to potential immigrants, asylum seekers and others. We suggest that this militarisation should be understood as part of the remaking of the Italian state in relation to recent Italian political and economic history and the current hegemonic social and political ethos in Europ…

  • Space agents: Anti‐racist feminism and the politics of scale in Turin, Italy

    Heather Merrill•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 12

This article discusses racialized politics among women in Turin, Italy, utilizing and expanding Neil Smith's concept of the spatial politics of scale specifically in relation to an anti‐racist organization, Alma Mater, that emerged during the early 1990s. International migration is relatively recent in Italy, and popular responses over the past decade have been both supportive and hostile. Overt and implicit expressions of racism and intolerance …

  • Inside and outside Italian political culture: Immigrants and diasporic politics in Turin

    Open Access•Heather Merrill, Donald Carter•ARTICLE•GeoJournal•2002•Cited by: 5•References: 2
